Once upon a time, many moons ago...

There were a poor couple and their newborn infant.

The couple loved their child so much they did whatever they could to provide for the little one.

Even if it meant killing someone...

Even if it meant stealing from someone...

They'll do whatever it takes to survive in this harsh, cruel world... for the sake of their child.

??? *female voice*
"I believe it all started on March 16, 998 A.D. How do I know the date? I have no clue."

~Flashback~

March 16, 998 A.D.

Mother suddenly approached me and grabbed my wrist, dragging me out with her.

Mother
"Come! Quickly!"

??? *female voice*
"But mother, where to?"

Mother
"There's no time to explain! Hurry!!"

I couldn't ask for any more questions as I followed my mother, who was gripping my left hand tightly. While guiding me and looking at her directions as if to make sure the coast is clear, mother then suddenly ran, catching me off guard as we head into the forest.

Surprisingly, I manage to follow her pace.

I don't know how long we ran, but I remember Mother telling me to go inside an abandoned barn house with her. I obeyed as she followed after me, closing the wooden, broken door by sliding it.

I then finally questioned her.

??? *female voice*
"Mother, why are we here? And where's father? Why isn't he—"

Mother
"Shh!"

Mother immediately covered my mouth with her right hand while the other is on her lips. The moment she did that, we heard unfamiliar footsteps running and voices of both men and dogs shouting and barking outside the barn.

And none of the men sounded like my father's.

Man 1
"Shit, they can't be far!"

??? *female voice*
"!!!"

Oh, did I forget to mention that it was snowing that day?

Man 2
"Find them! Kill them if you must!"

Ah, I also forgot to tell you that mother and I can see the men and their dogs outside by looking at the gaps inside the barn house.

Man 3
"Petty thieves! We'll make them pay!"

After hearing the men rant for some time, my mother and I noticed that their footsteps and their dogs walked a few steps away from us. I sighed in relief as they passed by, but the moment I felt hopeful, my heart sank in fear as I heard one of the dogs sniffing.

??? *female voice* *thinking*
