CHAPTER ONE
"Kim just a second, let me get my glasses and I will drop you off ok" my dad says walking back to his room. "It's OK dad I'll take the bus- Even if it's annoying at junior high "so you arrive early today at work and avoid working extra hours" I say. After a brief moment of silence in walks out of his room with a pair of glass stuck between his nose. "you know I want to make impact in my life" "of course you have made a lot of impact, I had a healthy breakfast, wonderful lunch already packed, amazing set of advice" I say. "Alright be safe I'll pick you up after work" he says giving me a peck on my cheek. "That's if you don't get to work double today". I ran out of the front yard and was able to get to the school bus before it left.
"this is going to be my last year in high school, I just can't wait" Sophia cooed silently as we walked down the hallway. I couldn't stop giggling at how quick she wanted to exit, you couldn't blame her being left in the dark since freshman was becoming unbearable for her. "chill is one more year and we are out on to the grown up world" I reassure her. We split ways and after series of handshake and hugs we all settled into our various classes waiting patiently for the principal's regular pep talk. The day went on as usual it would go the first day of every new session, not missing the usual food break. At least I got out with my hair not soaked and washed down to my white tee for the first time and my Adidas trainer careful to avoid stepping on a muddy mashed potato, all by sitting out at a corner with my headphone on and a slice of toasted bread.
Just after lunch as I step out to see our counselor addressing some student's and I made a failed attempt of escape, "Kim we've seen the results from last session competition you did well despite everything that occurred last session- 70% dosen't sound like well does it? -and we would appreciate it if you joined the student's council, so others can see a reason - or to revive the dead club –so we can have more like you". "Alright that would be no problem". That would be a huge problem. "I'll see what I can do about it" came my reply.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnngggggg the clock chimed when the second hand of the clock struck 3pm. I decided to pay a visit to my dad's construction site but first I headed to the ice-cream shop for a cup of two. The site was just three blocks away from the local ice-cream store. "hey Mr. Jonas do you mind for a cup of ice-cream it's sunny out here" I say popping my head from behind the coupled tractor. "you're back already". He says as he pulls the rubber glove over his hands, tucking it into his green overall and gave me a peck.
"you have a perfect timing for events, I was just intending to send Joe out to get for everyone a cup".
"I should have gotten more for everyone here, if I had any slightest idea". I wasn't in dire need of the ice-cream so I didn't join my dad to eat. I left the stand and was wandering about till I heard some hushed voices. "we just a little less time, give us more time and we'll be done with it, I assure you that". This person sound like an employee or a hired worker. "We need to send him out before it becomes uncontrollable and cause a great loss for us all" another voice say sounding in control. Whoever they were talking about must had really messed up. "Mr. Jonas is one of the best who has a unique idea, having him to leave means the building is going to have a half done appearance which won't sit well with the client remember". Mr. Jonas? I just hope they weren't referring to my dad. "We can as well......who's there?". Thanks to my poor spying skill, I kicked a metal lying on the floor and got their unwanted attention. I knew better than to reply them, I turn the opposite direction and walk away as silent as I could. "Hey you where do you think you going." One of the men inside the room say standing behind me. I pointed ahead of me. "where, you're not dumb". I know that. "I'm taking a walk up ahead you know leg cramps". Without more talking I walked out as quick as I could to avoid more interrogation. I walk back to the same stand where I left my dad to see him back to his attire he had on this morning. "where have you been work ended like ten minutes ago." "Oh just walking around you know to get a wider view of your workplace." He nodded. "ok so can we go now". "yeah sure sorry to keep you waiting." We left to the lobby where he signed out and collected his bag.
He drove us out of the site, and looked at me "Are you sure you're okay." I nod, now wasn't the right time to tell him my encounter at the site. "Mrs. Gomez suggested I join the student's council to help other kids like me." I say not wanting to trail off or give him a reason to suspect not that I had good acting skill. Good act, because I got no more questioning till we got home.
"Dinner's ready" I call out to my dad who busy setting the final door for his project show next week. "that was quick, hope is fully done" he says referring to the last time I made pasta half done and forced us both to pull an all-nighter due to constant visit to the loo. "promise it's much better either the cooker just got hotter or cooking speed increased, a little."
Dinner to go so I can lock up and check the latest playlist on Spotify until one wrong act. "Your seventeenth birthday is due in two weeks; I was planning something huge for you......." But "but you've got to spend it with your mom". "WHAT???!!!!!" I ask almost yelling. "you've been in touch with her, dad, we promised to move on without her, so where the hell did all this idea of staying with her arise from."
"language Kim, I never said you're going to stay with her"
"but you're going to anyway cause this..." I sigh "Goodnight Dad". I was half way out of the table when he says "It's best you sit to listen cause you'll be leaving next week to LA, I wanted us to have this talk in your favor but seems that's futile, don't think much about it, it's for your best, Goodnight."
I slumped onto my bed. I've got just one weeks to say goodbye to everything that's made up my life, one week to turn again to someone who said to my face that she could without my dad, without me, I actually wanted to query my dad for being a hypocrite, but everything he's ever done was for my best. I've always listened to him, obeyed him, maybe this one wasn't a bad trial anyway.
