The elevator dinged signaling we had made it to our floor and the doors opened slowly. I walked the floor and was instantly hit with a sickening sense of familiarity. It was just like it had been eight years ago. The same crisp white halls, and harsh cleaners. I had to keep reminding myself, it wasn't here. This is not where I'd been when I'd sent all of those like me to their deaths. This place was newer I never set foot here until today.
No one ever would, again. If we play our cards right. I took a deep breath to center myself before focusing on the task at hand. There were doors on either side of the hall and I knew just behind them were people who were incarcerated simply for being who they were. We were going to get them out I was going to get them out.
It was just like that day all those years ago, I felt a need to help, I had to. These people were nothing more than lab rats. They were numbers on a paper that would be erased and passed to the next one to fill their cell once they died. They meant nothing, they were nothing.
I took a deep breath as I walked the length of the hall, it was sickening to be in this place. My stomach roiled and my eyes watered at the memories. I'll get them out, Doris. I swear. I turned to the left following to the stairs, I wanted to know how many floors of prisoners there were. As I went, I found there were three floors. Over twelve rooms on each floor, thirty- six people. I clenched my jaw and went back to the elevator and took it all the way down. Each room was marked with a single lily burned into the door, it was a strange insignia, but I'm sure it had meaning.
I bit my lip as the elevator descended slowly, when the door opened Ash was standing there waiting. "Ok, I know how fast and far I have to spread. Get me to the main air system and I'll take over from there. They're gonna be opening any time and it's imperative that no one knows we're here." The boys nodded and Ash spoke up, "what about his office? Isn't there paperwork in it?"
I shook my head and leaned against the wall, "unfortunately no. I know how this guy works. He doesn't take the chance leaving any trace- aside from the people themselves- of his experiments." The words felt like a betrayal to the people on those rooms, the ones I swore to free. But, they were true. "No ones looking for them, the government basically hands them over. Today we're gonna ruin him. Ash, let's go."
I didn't have time for the conversation. I had a job to do, we had a job to do. Davi should be finishing up and on the prisoners' level soon enough. Let's just hope I can control my power enough to make this go smoothly. I gave everyone one last look before I turned and went to the stairway labeled 'employee only' and pushed it open. I didn't have to look to know Ash had followed me, like the good little helper he was.
We walked down the stairs quietly, each of us lost in our own thoughts. As I got to the last step, I saw it, "this is gonna be fun."
My job was to use my calming powers and get it flowing through the air systems to leave everyone defenseless. "Kai, they're coming in now." Timothy said through the speaker and I frowned, shit. This isn't going to be enough time for Davi to get into those rooms.
"How many?" I asked, I couldn't help the trickle of annoyance that filled my voice, after a moment of silence Jason's voice came through, "at least twelve." I frowned, twelve? The attendance sheet only showed eight, in the early morning at least. I shook my head, and forced myself to focus on the here Snd now. "Let them in, don't interfere. Davi," I waited for an answer. When one didn't come, I felt a hint of annoyance, after a moment longer Julia answered, "he's working on the security with the doors. Jason, Timothy, can you unlock them?"
Not half a second later a second voice came through, Davi, and it was laced with pure barely tempered rage, "Kai- this shit isn't budging." I took a deep breath and squeezed the bridge of my nose between my forefinger and thumb, "figure it out, Davi. It's a door- if you get beat by it and I get killed, I personally will haunt you and torment you from beyond the beyond until you die, and even then I'll still torment you."
There was silence before his voice came back, "kinky."
It was one simple word but it put a small smile on my lips before silence filled the waves again. I looked back to where the vents were and rolled my shoulders before turning to Ash. He smiled softly and I could tell he was uncomfortable. "Alright Ash, it's up to you to keep me safe." With that, I turned my attention to the job at hand. I was essentially useless after this point on. Please let this play out as we planned.
