Dear Diary,

While eating lunch today, one of my crew members brought to my attention a large, dark mass to the southwest of us.  We had sailed far away from the island during the night so I knew it couldn’t be rocks.  We were too far out into the ocean for rocks to be visible.  I ordered my crew to take the ship a little bit closer so that we could examine it to determine whether it was safe or not.  As we inched closer, I looked through my telescope, straining to see what the mysterious mass was.  I couldn’t make out any details to indicate what it was.  Suddenly, it moved.  I ordered my crew to take us around the object and to continue on.  After I went back to my cabin and finished my lunch, I looked behind the ship and caught sight of the mass following us.  Tomorrow I plan to send one of my crew members down into the water to take a look at it from a distance.  I will record what happens tomorrow night.
