"memory; something remembered from the past"

the door fell shut with a silent clicking noise, shortly after being locked. he just wanted to make sure his grandmother wouldn't catch him.
but now that he was in his room, without the only person he lives with, his annoyingly stereotyped classmates or su, kani was alone. almost immediately the dull feeling of being completely alone washed through him with full force again. what was he up to again? ah, right. he wanted to have some alone time, he remembered. so, he sat down on his messy, slightly damaged bed. suddenly he didn't feel as bad anymore. the thirteen year old wanted to get up to grab his book from his desk, but it felt like he was bound or glued to the mattress. and as soon as he saw his old plush toy, the loneliness started taking over again. he wasn't even really alone, his grandmother was literally next door, only a few steps away. but seeing the old bunny plush toy made him recall the memories from back when his parents were still alive, when they used to live together in a lovely house near kyoto. he missed the times when he used to play outside everyday, he didn't have to worry about any problems. his life seemed to be perfect. too perfect.
as soon as he started primary school, something dreadful happened to both his parents. kani never got to know why, the only thing he knew was that none of his parents were happy about it. the only thing that now reminds him of his parents was the amount of "medication" they both started to take after what happened. the boy was only seven when his parents both died from a drug overdose. immediately after their passings, his grandmother took care of him. since she lived in osaka, kani had to move on and leave a part of himself behind. the only object and memory he still had was his old, bunny plush toy, that his father and mother gifted to him on his third birthday.

he snaps back into reality. after a little while of blankly staring at his creamy white wall, his gaze went back to the bunny. he wiped his long and messy fringe out of his face to be able to see better, but it didn't help much. he grabbed the plush toy with all of his strength, and held it in front of himself. tears started to blur his vision, but he wiped them away with the back of his hand. his behaviour was ridiculous, what was he even doing? was he really that desperate?
a lonely tear slowly flowed down his cheek, and he didn't have any strength left to wipe it away. as soon as more tears ran down his reddened cheeks, kani moved himself into a slightly more comfortable position, his back pressed against the wall. a sudden sting in his chest made him flinch and by now, he was silently crying. there was no reason for him to stay, no reason for him to keep on trying. he didn't even realise that he grabbed the plushie and held it tightly to his torso. his knees were pulled close to his chest, hoping that it would cause the discomfort he felt to vanish.

why, oh why did every day have to end like this?
