Ryan's POV
"I'm going as fast as I possibly can, Devin!"
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just that, you know, your house exploded seconds after we left it. I don't get why there are so many rules in this place."
Ian sighed and squinted out the windshield, trying to make out a passing sign through the onslaught of rain. Devin was hunched over uncomfortably in the back seat, an arm thrown around Quirren. He had been increasingly irritated since Seto had left to go back home, which had been a good 5 days ago. Quirren didn't seem to be used to her father acting like this, and looked worried. Jerome was next to them, pressed against the window. Ty was in the far back of the large vehicle , stretched out in his seat.
I shifted and glared at my phone, trying to make out the directions it was displaying. It didn't help that it had gotten cracked in the fight.
"Get on the thruway up here, I think," I instructed. Ian nodded and pulled the car up the ramp and onto the thruway.
"Guess no one felt like coming out in this mess," He muttered. The highway was almost devoid of cars, spare a few in the distance.
"Don't blame them," Ty chimed in. "It's a mess out here, all this rain." Ian mumbled his agreement and squinted, fingers tightening on the wheel.
"Aw, c'mon. If they block us off..." He said suddenly. There was a figure up ahead, waving their arms rapidly. I frowned.
"Is he signaling us or something?" Ian shrugged.
"Who knows. We don't really have time for it, whatever it is."
We drove by the person, leaving them standing there without a passing glance.
The car flew up and twisted over instantly.
It crashed down with a deafening crunch on the top, skidding and swirling. My head hit the ceiling and everything was moving to much to be focused on. Glass shattered, someone screamed, and a defeaning roar blasted in my ears.
Everything hurt. No, head hurt. Arm hurt. Not everything. When I peeled my eyes open, red blurred my vision and stuck uncomfortably to my face. Groaning, I reached out and unlocked my seat belt, sliding down to the ceiling of the car.
"Ryan?" A weak voice sounded, but it sent a shooting spike of pain through my skull.
"Mmm?" I got out. The whole upside down car thing was rather disorienting. Could the door even be opened? Didn't they always kick the window out in movies?
"You good?" More pain, twisting and lancing through my brain. I groaned out what may have been a no, before looking around and realizing I didn't need to kick out the window because the entire windshield was shattered.
Slowly, I dragged myself through the hole and over bits of shattered glass. Cuts littered my arms and hands when I got out, but I was out.
"Get down!"
A force hit me around the waist like a truck, pushing me backwards onto the ground. My head throbbed when I hit, pain momentarily blinding all senses.
"Idiot, get him behind the car! God, what were you thinking?"
Someone grabbed my shirt and yanked me forward, shoving me harshly until I was propped up against the car.
"Ryan, you with us? I feel like the rain is making you look a lot more bloody than you actually are, so, you good?" I squinted through the rain, making out Ian crouching in front of me. I nodded slowly and pulled myself up.
"What's going on, exactly?"
"I'll tell you what's going on, it's that you should get the hell down!" The girl suddenly appeared at my side and yanked me down, forcing me to take cover behind the car. Her black hair was soaked, but she didn't even bother to flick the water out of her eyes. She was peering suspiciously over the edge of the car, a gun clutched in her left hand.
"Hey, what?" I asked. Ian shook his head.
"Remember Adam's friend from minecraft? Yeah, I think this is her. Listen, is anyone else awake in there?" I shrugged.
"One person, maybe."
The girl suddenly shot up and sprinted forward, firing shot after shot in rapid succession. There was a muffled roar of anger and she retreated back, flattening against the car.
"Get everybody in there out, now. I can keep him away, but not for long. Go!" With that, she was gone, running off into the rain. Ian managed to yank open the nearest door, and Devin slid out. He seemed dazed, but he grabbed Quirren and understood what I meant when I shoved him and told him to run.
Distant gunshots echoed over the roar of rain and thunder. Ian crawled into the vehicle and reappeared a moment later with Ty, who took off as soon as he was free. Jerome stumbled out a moment later and took off after him.
"Go!" I shouted to Ian. He shook his head and pointed to where the girl had run. I sighed in defeat and we both ran in that direction, following the sound of an occasional gunshot. Eventually, two vague shadows could be made out.
"You're positive this is Adam's friend?" I yelled. "It would kinda suck if it was actually the demon girl and she just shot everybody!"
"It's Ashais, trust me!" He yelled back. "I just know!"
She was shooting slower now, spinning in a circle and firing whenever the dark sorcerer appeared. The bullets only seemed to make him angry, though, and he kept getting closer and closer to her.
Ian ran straight into her and pulled her along. We ran right past the dark sorcerer, feet pounding against wet pavement.
