Mitch's POV

Humming to myself, I pulled a box from the shelf and paused to read the label. Shifting to the right, I placed it back on the shelf and casually stepped over the body laying in the middle of the aisle. The blood was getting all over my shoes, which would be a pain to clean up, but come on. It's not my fault the other just had to kill the manager in the aisle with all the junk food.

A scream echoed throughout the building, vaguely sounding from the far end of it. I leaned against the shelf and sighed.

"Can you get on with it?" I yelled. The screaming quieted and I could almost imagine the sarcastic look the other was giving to his victim.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he called back. "Am I boring you?"

"No. Well, yes. Kind of. Jeez, dude, I only wanted to make a supply run. Did we have to go all World War on the entire grocery store?" I asked.

"Excuse me, I get bored." He replied. "One can only build so many card towers."

I rolled my eyes and tossed the box into my bag, stepping back over the body and walking up the aisle. The store was mostly dark, courtesy of all the light fixtures having bullet holes in them. The only one he hadn't had me shoot out was a main fixture in the center of the store, allowing for it to still be dim but not pitch black.

There was one last scream and then it cut off the way it only does with death. A moment later he appeared, rubbing his knife off on his shirt.

"S'pose it's time for us to blow this joint, right?"

"We are not literally blowing it up, or setting in on fire. But yes, let's go." He agreed. He pulled his backpack more securely around his shoulders. I flipped up my hood and slid on a pair of sunglasses.

We had found our exit fairly quick. It was a single door leading into the basement, but the basement had a direct door into the sewer systems. He shot the hinges once it was closed, preventing it from ever opening again.

"So, did you get anything good?" He asked as we walked. I shrugged.

"What do you care? You only eat enough to live."

He flipped me off. "Indulgence is irrelevant. Notice my sleep habits as well. So, did you get anything good."

"Mostly canned food and water," I sighed. "After this little stunt, we probably aren't going to be able to go out again for a while. Your face is likely plastered all over the news."

He grinned and pointed at himself. "What, this face? This is Adam's, not mine."

I paused at the maintenance door, shrugging off my bag to find my lock pick kit. "Yeah, well, you're still riding him around. If he gets caught, you do too."

"I don't have to deal with the consequences, though." He offered cheerfully.

The lock opened with a click, and I yanked the door open.

"Freeze!"

I slammed the door shut.

"We gotta go." I said.

He nodded. "Obviously. Lead the way. I don't have enough ammo to knock out that door, so once you stop leaning against it, I suggest we run. Quickly."

"Oh, you think?" I muttered. Nonetheless, I launched off the door and we both sprinted down the tunnel. The door crashed open behind us, and angry shouting made the other laugh.

"Get us a way out, Mitch!" He cheered.

"Up ahead, there should be a gate that dumps into a river. Get out that, climb onto the tube, and go south. There's a farmer's market that opens in about 45 minutes. We should be able to lose them," I recited, having memorized the area two nights ago.

The pounding footsteps of the authorities were getting louder and closer. Up ahead, light filtered through the half covered opening. I sprinted ahead of the other and leapt straight out of it.

For a moment, I was slowed down as I flew through the air. Then my fingers curled around a tree branch and I swung forward, cursing wildly as all my muscles protested the sudden rough treatment. I quickly shoved the pain aside and scrambled up the branch, shuffling over until I could safely land on the ground.

Below me, the other exploded out of the tunnel and jumped straight down towards the river. I dropped to the ground and turned to watch him take the plunge.

He was wading up onto the bank, having landed in a shallow area. I shook my head as he clambered out and flashed me a thumbs up. Two men dressed in full SWAT gear suddenly emerged at the end of the tunnel, and I sprinted up the hill as the other ran up the bank and disappeared into the growing crowd of people gathering around the farmers market.
