It's been almost three weeks since I saved the raven and it's been pretty good. I've gotten in the habit of petting it which it seemed to really like. I would scratch it's chest and it would shake itself when we were done.
I woke up and it was pressed into the crook of the back of my legs which it barely fit into, and Sushi was pressed to my chest. I carefully pet both, letting them know I was moving to get dressed.
Balancing school was pretty easy. I was able to do my work, but only if Sushi was in my lap and the raven sat on the shelf on the back of my desk and watched me do it. It I didn't, it would throw a small temper tantrum and flap it's good wing at my feet.
I put on the same white shirt I was wearing when I found the raven, and some black leggings with some light colored ripped shorts which went to my mid thigh. I patted them both goodbye and kissed Sushi's head before I put on my same white converse, grabbed my bag and went to school.
Betheny avoided me since then but had stopped wearing dark clothes. I carried on like I had been doing. It was Friday, I would take the ravens cast off today and see how it had healed and it it needed treated for longer.
Sushi seemed to be accustomed to it too. A couple days ago, when it was sleeping, I caught her grooming it. It's eyes were half closed and it didn't seem to mind which was good. I just hoped when I let it go, it wouldn't come back.
I fed it whatever meat and stuff we had and it hasn't refused anything yet so it seemed alright. I had a small shallow bowl of water on my nightstand and claimed it was for Sushi when it was so the raven didn't have to get off my bed at night or when it was on my bed.
When I came home from school, it was the same routine again, do my work with the raven dozing on my desk, Sushi sleeping in my lap while I grumbled at my geometry.
Next Wednesday was my last day of being a junior and summer break would start. Not that there really was a summer here, same weather year round.
After dinner I politely rushed up stairs to see the raven. It was poking around on the balcony I had left the door half cracked so it could go outside. The bars were too thin for it to fit through and it couldn't jump very high so it was a risk I was willing to take.
I opened the door and it trotted back in hopefully.
"I'm going to take off your cast today and see how your wing has healed, okay?" It let out a small croak and walked into the bathroom.
I swear it understood what I've been saying. I've suspected it but maybe it's just been trained from me asking it to go places and following me around my room.
I set it on the counter and I carefully cut the bandage off and took its wing and stretched it gently to it's full wingspan and it didn't seem to mind.
"Alright, it seems okay, I'm going to release you tomorrow so you can get used to your wing being healed." It jumped off the counter, much more gracefully than the last clumsy landings it's had without the other wing to balance it's fall. I grabbed some clothes and showered.
I was putting on my signature cream sweater when I looked on the bed and paused in my tracks, my sweater not even pulled down to cover my torso.
The raven was sitting on my bed with Sushi, both sleeping. Sushi was sleeping on her side and the raven sat against her stomach, its head resting in the crook of her neck. I pulled my sweater down and climbed in bed, careful not to disturb them but when I pulled the blanket over my waist.
"Prrrip?"
Sushi purred, stretching. She licked the ravens head once, waking it up before she curled up on my pillow, waiting for me to lay down. I was not prepared for what happened next,
The raven nestled against my back and tucked its beak into its chest.
I really hope it leaves tomorrow...
And I fell asleep, praying I wouldn't miss it when it was gone.
