Dance With Me

I step down the staircase, taking deep breaths as I make my way down. My emerald dress, although elegant, is giving me trouble. Because it fits tightly against my legs, stopping right above my knee, it makes my legs have trouble moving smoothly. My feet, which are already wobbling because of the heels my sister made me wear, are having a hard time taking steps. I breathe out, aware that eyes are on me, trying not to fall on my face. After what seems like ages, I make it down the stairs. I look around to see the music starting up again, making boys grab their girls and head out to the floor. I went stag tonight. All because my brother refused to take me and I haven't had a boyfriend in about a month.

I watch all the couples, as well as groups of several girls or boys, rocking out on the floor. I sit down on one of the plastic chairs lined up against the wall, my hoop earrings bouncing against my face. I sigh inwardly, wishing I could have a partner, just to have an excuse to join in the crazy fun out there on the floor. The bass is pounding, echoing across the school gym. I lean against the hard back of the chair, closing my eyes. I feel the lights above the floor bounce across my face briefly before they move on, flying around the room.

I feel something land on my exposed knee, making my eyes pop open. To my surprise, a boy is standing next to me, his hand on my knee. A very handsome boy is touching me. I shift my legs slightly, making him remove his hands. He smiles at me, showing dimples. His blue eyes sparkle with interest. "You're not dancing?" I shake my head and manage a small smile. "Nope. I like watching. That," I force a small laugh. "And I don't have a partner."

The lights flash by again, revealing the spikes in his blonde hair. He extends a hand to me. "I don't have one either. Dance with me?" I smile excitedly, happy to accept. "Sure!" I grab his hand as he helps me up.

We head out onto the floor, mingling with the other bodies. The music blares, the colored lights bounce, the bodies around us sway to the beat. I laugh, caught up in the moment. The boy twirls me. Its a sweet gesture, but it feels out of place with all this club music. I stop dancing, trying to catch my breath. I rest my hands on his firm chest, trying to steady myself. His handsome features watch me. "By the way, I'm Alexander." He says in a light voice. I smile at him. "Nice name." Alexander blinks. After a couple of seconds, he starts to laugh.

I put on a half-smile, feeling a little awkward. He grins at me before grabbing my hands, making us twist back and forth to the music. He tells me, "Sorry for laughing. I've never had that kind of reaction before. It was different." Hesitating, I ask, "Good different or bad different?"

Alexander answers me quickly. "Good different." His hand moves to my face, cupping it while his thumb slowly robs little circles on my cheek. I shake slightly at the intimate touch. "Definitely a good different." I smile, relieved to have mad a good first impression. Another song starts playing loudly, making Alexander smile widely at me, his eyes bright. "Dance with me."
