IT WAS JUST road. Endless road. Woods surrounded me, with an occasional large house passing me by. I've been walking for what? An hour? There's seriously something wrong with my head. I mean, it was a two hour drive from the airport. Should I just turn back? But then everything I'd done so far would be for nothing. I shut my eyes and clasped my hands together, praying for the town to just suddenly appear.
HONK HONK!
I screamed and spun around. No cars had appeared during my entire walk, so I had taken to simply walking in the middle of the road. Now there was a shiny, 1970's looking car honking at me, with the boy in the driver's seat wearing a stereotypical jock jacket. Did he just walk out of a movie set? Or did I travel time?
"Hey! Why are you out here?" He rolled down the window and poked his head out, grinning. I froze for a moment. I might be stupid enough to run off without telling anyone, jump out of a tree, and walk for an hour straight, but I certainly wouldn't be dumb enough to get into a stranger's car.
...even if it was a pretty cool stranger.
"I'm walking to town." I responded shortly, trying to cover up my earlier shock by crossing my arms. He let out a laugh.
"Well, I'm going downtown too. It's cold out here, do you want to catch a ride with me?" He offered, resting his elbow on the window. Well, he got one thing right. It was definitely cold. It wasn't so bad earlier, but it had gotten windier. Now a chilly breeze was blowing through the street, making me shiver. I narrowed my eyes, considering my options. Keep walking: freeze to death. Go with the jock guy: get kidnapped and murdered. Turn back: Vasi.
"I'll come." I responded, trotting to the front passenger seat. He unlocked it and I crawled inside, shuffling into the seat and stealing glances at him. I actually did it. I got into a car with a stranger. Mom's probably rolling in her grave right now.
"My name's Charlie. I'm 16. What's your name?" He began as he drove off.
"I'm Ana. I recently moved here. I'm 15." I introduced myself, my thoughts beginning to race in my head. Whatever. At this point, I can't do anything even if he does want to kill me.
For some reason, this thought didn't make me feel any better.
"Ohh, really? Do you know what school you're going to?" A standard creepy question. My hands started to get clammy.
"Why do you ask?" I looked out the window.
"'Cuz I'm a sophomore this year. If you're in my school we might see each other around." He explained. Ah, I'm so dumb. He said he's 16. That's a totally normal question to ask other kids. Although, he did offer a random girl a ride. He could still be a creep.
"Oh. Uh, well, I'm actually not sure what school I'm going to. My brothers didn't tell me yet. They only said I'd be starting tomorrow." I answered.
"Ha, you've got some weird brothers. They don't even tell you what school you're going to the day before. What're their names? I might know 'em." He smiled, glancing over at me before his eyes returned to the road.
"I have a twin called Anastasius, and an older brother named Nick. They're the only ones that go to school, anyway." He choked.
"Y-You're their sister?" He asked, although more to himself. I shrugged.
"Is this a small town?"
"Yeah, well, it's mainly downtown and a whole lotta land. As you probably know by now." He laughed at his own joke. I turned my attention from the side window to the road in front of us, realizing we were already reaching downtown.
