*5 years later*
My footsteps echoed through the hallways of the apartment building, the thin carpet barely muffling the sound. The bags in my grip felt heavy as I dragged myself up the stairs. After walking up the four flights of stairs I finally reached the door to my boyfriend's apartment.
" Kane!" I yelled while opening the wooden door. There was no response. Feeling a bit frustrated I closed the door and proceeded to put down the bags that weighed so much in my delicate hands. I found my boyfriend, Kane in the kitchen with a sour look on his handsome face. " Someone got an attitude after I left, did you miss me or something?" I spoke with a smile, and a smile I did not get in return. His expression was puzzled, full of confusion and maybe even anger. What's his issue? I thought as I walked over to the fridge, looking for something to eat.
" So... Anything new going on? The traffic in the city was almost bumper to bumper, but it was worth it. I got some new clothes, and even something for you." I spoke nonchalantly, hoping to get a response or even a reaction from him.
He finally spoke up, his voice possessing an accusing tone. " You're quite the little actress Aurora. How could you come here after what you did?" I had no idea what he was talking about, this morning after we ate breakfast together I went out and had gone shopping. What was he talking about? " Um Kane, what are you talking about." A look of shock hit Kane's face like a hard punch. " What are you talking about?" He repeated. "Aurora do not act like you didn't cheat on me last night. If you're going to do such a thing to ruin our relationship, at least own up to it. Don't play dumb."
Cheat on Kane? I would never do anything like that, and I never have. " Kane, I have never cheated on you, and I would never want to. I love you. You know me Kane I would never, I don't hurt the people I love," I argued. " Oh really," said a new voice, accompanied by a new figure appearing from behind the couch. Harvey.
What does this a-hole want now? I thought, annoyed to see Kane's best friend Harvey. I absolutely hated Harvey. Kane and I had been dating for the past two years. It was everything I had ever wanted in a relationship. At the time we were 16 when we started dating, and now we had just both graduated high school and he had rented this apartment for the two of us. Unbeknownst to many, I had been an orphan for a majority of my life. My parents had both died in a plane crash when I was 10 years old. None of my other family wanted to take me in, so I had been forced to live in an orphanage, until I turned 18. My relationship with Kane had been the only love I had received in years. The only bad thing about having him in my life was also having his best friend in my life, Harvey Bishop. The most annoying person who has ever existed. He's like a third wheel most of the time, and sometimes that's okay, but occasionally the only person Kane will listen to is Harvey. All of his decisions are made with Harvey's input, or he wants to do a specific activity because Harvey wants to. Kane denies all of this, but sometimes Kane won't even listen to me, because the jerk is present.
I spoke to Harvey with a cold tone, " What are you doing here, pain of my existence?" His brow furrowed in annoyance to my question " I was just telling Kane where I saw you go yesterday afternoon, before you came here." Said Harvey with an innocent look.
I was extremely confused, it sounded like Harvey had just indirectly admitted that he was stalking me. Becoming extremely annoyed with Kane's best friend I spoke up. " Before I came back here for the night I went to the farmer's market. I even told Kane where I was going, he knows I went there." Harvey eyed me in a weird manner and began to walk in circles around me, like a hawk going in for the kill.
" Wow Aurora, I'm surprised. I didn't realize you were such a good liar. You almost had me convinced, but it's not gonna work. I know the truth and now Kane does too, thanks to me. Last night I was walking around the city, near Times Square and I saw you at a restaurant with another guy. You looked awfully comfortable too, I saw you two holding hands, I was in complete and utter disbelief when I saw. So, I decided to stay longer and watch you betray your boyfriend. I was lucky I did too because after you and the mystery man left the restaurant, I saw you two hop in his car and start making out."
I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that Harvey made up this ridiculous story to make Kane think I had cheated on him. It clearly wasn't true, Harvey was a psychopath. I looked at Kane to see his reaction on the elaborate story Harvey had just told. I could tell he was hurt, he looked miserable, his eyes staring out the window, his face full of sorrow.
" Kane!" I shouted, hoping to get him to listen to me, hoping to get my words comprehended in his brain. I placed my hands on his brooding face, and looked deep into his eyes. " Kane, you can't believe Harvey. I swear on my life that I didn't cheat on you, I love you."
His calloused hands gripped mine and pulled them away from his face. " Don't lie to my face Aurora. I have to believe Harvey, why would he ever lie to me? Recently you haven't been telling me where you go during the day, so what evidence do you have to prove you haven't cheated on me."
He was right. I had no evidence. I had no proof, all I could tell him was how much I loved him over and over again. Even that would never be enough, when Harvey affected Kane's decisions, his decisions were final. Tears of anger slowly streamed down my face. I stood in the middle of the apartment choking back sobs. Kane's low voice brought me back to reality, " Obviously, we're breaking up." That sentence alone felt like a bullet burying itself in my chest, but then he delivered another one. " You also can't live here anymore, I'm sorry Aurora, but it's all for the best."
I couldn't live here anymore? This was my home, I had nowhere else to go. Not only was I without the love of my life, but I would also be homeless. Abandoned on the streets, I had no family, no friends. My life had turned to a complete disaster within a matter of hours.
Harvey was having a hard time masking a smile as he spoke. " Kane wants you out now, so I packed all your stuff for you." He recklessly threw stuff at me, the bag overflowing with my belongings. "Hope you like living on the streets, slut."
He had gone too far. He had lied to Kane, which got my boyfriend to hate me, which also rendered me to become homeless. Then he did the unthinkable. He called me the s word.
Without any regrets, I walked over to him and slapped him across his ugly face. His reaction was immediate anger, but without stuttering at all I left him speechless. " You may have gotten my boyfriend to break up with me and cause me to be homeless, but guess what? At least, I never have to see your face again you son of a bitch."
Then without a second thought of him or Kane, I snatched my belongings off the ground and opened the door, slamming it behind me. I walked out of the apartment feeling powerful, heartbroken, and unsure of what my future would look like.
