"Geez you look rough" Jessica, one of Elsie's three sisters commented with a look of disdain evident on her face.
"Thanks" Elsie replied sarcastically through her teeth
It was true though, she had pulled an all-nighter and was discovering the hard way that it was very unlike how movies portrayed it to be, teenage girls all dolled up noticing the time too late before having to rush to school.
Elsie had been very aware of what the time was but gave up trying to get a wink of sleep at around 11:00 as she found her attempts futile and began to take more interest in a painting she had started earlier that day before meeting with Steve. It wasn't of anything in particular and she certainly didn't consider herself an artist, she just liked how the colors blended together on the page and how she could turn a simple brush stroke into an emotion. She didn't consciously choose to make her pieces match her feelings but upon looking back on them, it was clear to see that they were a reflection of just this.
Elsie bent her head over her bowl of cereal, choosing to ignore the looks of disgust Jessica kept shooting her way.
Her other two (more pleasant) sisters, Molly and Claire came barrelling down the stairs tripping over each other's feet. It was a wonder they hadn't fallen as this was a routinely occurrence and they weren't as small as they once were.
"Mommyyy" Claire whined as she approached the counter to see her food not already prepared. Their mother entered the room beaming at the pair of them as she set to work making their breakfast.
This is how she had used to treat Elsie but now that she had developed her own personality and style without listening to or caring for her mother's input, it was like she had been discarded and was in the process of being replaced. Elsie loved the girls but didn't want to rub off on them too much as they were the centre of mom's attention. They were happy.
It was a rather late breakfast today as the family weren't exactly morning birds and Elsie had been quite content to just sit in her room surrounded by her oil paints. Wanting to make herself look more presentable to go surprise Steve at work, Elsie asked to excuse herself from the table.
"You just want to go see your boyfriend" Jessica huffed and their mother's head snapped toward Elsie who sunk down in her chair just wanting to disappear into thin air.
"Boyfriend? What boyfriend?" she questioned, looking thoroughly ruffled by now as it been made clear that none of the girls should start dating until they move out.
"Steve Harrington" Jess giggled, enjoying herself.

After much arguing and yelling, Elsie had escaped to her room where she sat in front of her mirror as she applied a light layer of makeup: just some foundation, a little bit of eyeliner and some blush across her cheeks.
