Mandeok-dong was a loud neigborhood, everyone in Busan was aware of that fact, though it was best to not mention it in front of people from Mandeok who were known to be easily offended. Only fools or newbies in town dared to pick up a fight with someone from Mandeok because locals knew too well you can't easily win an argument against those strongheaded and loud people.
Although Mandeok had quite a reputation, Lee Jieun, 8 years old, strongly believed it was the best neighborhood in Busan. In her opinion, the appropriate adjective to describe the people here was "passionate". People from Mandeok were inhabited with a fiery passion they naturally expressed in their tone, mannerisms and facial expressions. While Jieun wasn't born in Mandeok but in Seoul, and only moved here with her grandmother 4 years ago, she felt the same fire and passion within her.
And while that fiery personnality inherited from Mandeok-dong might seem like an anecdotic fact, Jieun will realize later in her life how it shaped her life, as well as Jungkook's.
When Jieun's parents died in a car accident when she was 4, she went to live with her grandmother in Busan. Her parents had a huge debt so their possession in Seoul were sold to cover the debts, and Jieun was left with nothing. Her grandmother's pension was not enough for the two of them to live comfortably and they only managed to get by every month thanks to the small orphan allowance given by the governement and the generosity of their neighbors.
Indeed, contrary to popular belief around the country, people from Mandeok were not rude, they were the warmest people Jieun had ever encountered. Every winter, the neighbors would give them coal briquettes (yeontan) to heat their house. When her grandmother struggled to pay the fee for Jieun's school trip last year, their neighbors lended her money. Twice a week, they were invited for dinner at the Jeon's house and they would give them enough side dishes to last for a week. There were no secrets in their neighborhood, everyone knew each other lives (the good things and the bad things) and helped each other when it was needed. Jieun knew those people got her back and she grew up with that comforting feeling.
