Chapter Forty-Five
Confrontation
Edythe Cullen
June 15, 2006A shrill, ear-shattering scream jolted me back into consciousness.
"Oh! Edythe!" Mother cried out in delight, her face hovering above my own as I fought to keep my eyes open. "Carlisle, she's conscious!"
"I heard." He remarked, appearing above me as well. "Edythe, can you hear me? Don't move a muscle, just blink twice if you can hear me." He instructed.
I blinked two hard blinks, trying to keep myself from screaming out in pain again. I bit down on my lip, hard, and struggled to calm down my frenzied breathing.
"P-pain-" I struggled to speak as I struggled to keep still.
"Edythe," Garrett's gorgeous face was suddenly even with my own "focus on me. Don't think about the pain. Just look at me."
I was about to spit in his face for mocking me so, however, the more I relaxed and stared at him the more I found myself in control of the pain.
"That's it, easy breaths." He praised me, offering me a beautifully encouraging grin. "I'm so glad you're awake." He spoke softly to me.
"Vic-Vic-"
"Is gone." He hushed me. "Edward and I, with the help of his friend, took care of her and her companion. He and Bella are safe. I'm so sorry I left you."
"I t-told-"
"Edythe, don't strain yourself trying to speak." My father begged me, his hands carefully examining me from head to toe, and I wondered how badly I was injured.
"Badly." Mother answered my unspoken question. "You were decapitated and suffered a near amputation below your right knee. There's lots of bite wounds and crushed parts."
"That's where most of the burning sensation is coming from, the bites." Father explained, reappearing where I could see him easier.
My breath caught in my lungs as my fathers hands twisted something back into place. The uncontrollable urge to scream was hard to fight back.
"Oh I'm so sorry, Edythe." Mother cooed, petting my hair in an effort to comfort me, obviously very uncomfortable overhearing my thoughts. "No, I'm fine." She dismissed me quickly.
"Turn o-off." I spoke through my teeth.
"Okay, okay, fine." She nodded. "Edward, you too. You shouldn't hear either."
"E-Edward?" I gasped, trying to turn my head to find him.
The horrific ripping sensation of turning my neck was nearly enough to send me unconscious again, and I screamed in agony as my brother rushed to my side.
"Elizabeth Edythe," He chastised me playfully, carefully bracing my face in his hand in order to straighten my neck "you can't keep scaring us all like this."
"S-sorry."
"Shh, none of that." He shook his head. "Sending Garrett to help me was a very selfless thing you did. I don't think we'd all be safe without his help. Thank you, sister." He smiled sweetly at me before offering Garrett a proud look. "And thank you, brother."
"My pleasure." Garrett grinned excitedly.
"The Volturi will be arriving any moment." Alice spoke urgently and I tried my best to sit up.
"No, Edythe." My father chided me, his hands guiding me back down. "Stay down, you're not well enough to be on your feet yet."
"Up." I gritted my teeth, pulling myself up by gripping onto Garrett's shoulders and pulling myself into his embrace.
