The ground and rooftops were covered by thick carpets of snow in the small city of Burgess, and ice travelled about window panes and cars. It was late morning, and the Bennetts were all up and ready for the cool, wintery day. Downstairs in their house, Jamie rushed about pulling on his coat and trainers, dashing upstairs and swinging open a bedroom door. A teenage girl sat by the window, sketching the view from where she was roughly and nibbling her lip in thought. The family greyhound Abby was lying peacefully beside her, looking up immediately in interest as Jamie poked his head in.
"Daisy, we're going outside! You coming?"
Daisy smiled absent-mindedly and nodded, rubbing out a mark and redoing it. "Yeah, I'll meet you there in a sec."
Jamie ran back downstairs, hurrying off to his friends. Daisy sighed lightly, putting down her pencil and looking to Abby, who gazed back at her innocently.
"What do you think, girl?"
Abby barked consolingly, panting and getting up. Daisy smiled and looked at her faint reflection in the window - loose honey blonde waves, with braids at the front sides joined together to hang at the back, green eyes and freckles scattered across the bridge of her nose. She wore a yellow and white striped top and light blue denim dungarees, with white leggings and green Converse. Her mother tapped on the door and came in with a warm smile.
"Honey, aren't you gonna be cold wearing that? Wear a jacket when you go out, okay?"
"Yeah, I will," Daisy replied, setting her sketchbook to one side and getting up, Abby watching after her in anticipation. "I'm going now. C'mon, Abby!"
Abby barked happily and bolted down the stairs and to the door, Daisy grabbing her jacket before pushing open the door and advancing towards her younger brother and his friends, ruffling his hair playfully.
"It says here that they found Bigfoot hair samples and DNA in Michigan!" Jamie exclaimed, showing Daisy his book. "That's, like, super-close!"
"Here we go again," Claude said knowingly, with a roll of his eyes and a grin upon noticing Daisy. "Hi, Daisy!"
"You saw the video too, Claude. He's out there!" Jamie insisted.
Sophie and Mrs Bennett came outside, Abby lurking around them.
"That's what you said about aliens!"
"And the Easter Bunny!" Claude added with a laugh.
Daisy grinned,
"The Easter Bunny is real," Jamie told him with a roll of his eyes, looking to his sister for backup.
"Sure he is," Daisy agreed. "Hey, I'm sixteen, and I still believe in it. Why not?"
For a moment, Daisy paused in her tracks as she thought she sensed something. Something or someone, near. Dismissing it, she went back to drawing patterns in the snow.
"Come on, you guys will believe anything!"
"Easter Bunny, hop hop hop," Sophie said with a smile, jumping down the stairs before tripping over Abby in a mid-jump and falling over with a cry. Daisy sighed and picked her up with a half-smile, spinning her around in the air until her whimpering become laughs of delight.
"Jamie, hat!" Mrs Bennett reminded him, dumping it on his head. "We don't want Jack Frost nipping at your nose."
Daisy looked up in curiosity, as did Jamie. "Who's Jack Frost?"
"I think he's a spirit that spreads winter," Daisy said with wonder in her eyes. "Or so I've heard."
Mrs Bennet chuckled and shook her head. "It's no one, honey, just an expression. Daisy, go with Jamie and the twins, just in case, okay?"
