こんにちは皆さん!In this chapter we'll be learning different times and phrases including time! 行きましょう!
Q: 今何時(いまなんじ)ですか。What time is it now?
Q: 何時(なんじ)ですか。What time is it?
These two questions mean the same thing, one is just a bit more specific. Now here's a list of the words you'll need to know in order to answer.
午前(ごぜん): This means a.m. or morning time
午後(ごご): This means p.m. or afternoon time
時(じ): This will be our counter for hours
分(ふん/ぷん): This will be our counter for minutes
半(はん): This means half, so it essentially means 30 minutes. This, as well as writing 三十分 is acceptable.
Now for the minutes and hours. We'll use these to build compounds which contain times in order to answer the questions at the top.
一時(いちじ): One o'clock
二時(にじ): Two o'clock
三時(さんじ): Three o'clock
四時(よじ): Four o'clock
五時(ごじ): Five o'clock
六時(ろくじ): Six o'clock
七時(しちじ): Seven o'clock
八時(はちじ): Eight o'clock
九時(くじ): Nine o'clock
十時(じゅうじ): Ten o'clock
十一時(じゅういちじ): Eleven o'clock
十二時(じゅうにじ): Twelve o'clock
Since I'm in the US and we don't use military time, this is as far as I'll go for the hours. Now on to the minutes.
一分(いっぷん): One minute
二分(にふん): Two minutes
三分(さんぷん): Three minutes
四分(よんぷん): Four minutes
五分(ごふん): Five minutes
六分(ろっぷん): Six minutes
七分(ななふん): Seven minutes
八分(はちぷん): Eight minutes
九分(きゅうふん): Nine minutes
十分(じゅうぷん): Ten minutes
二十分(にじゅうぷん): Twenty minutes
三十分(さんじゅうぷん): Thirty minutes
四十分(よんじゅうぷん): Forty minutes
五十分(ごじゅうぷん): Fifty minutes
六十分(ろくじゅうぷん): Sixty minutes
Now that we have all the components, let's put them together to answer the question! Make sure you can read the kanji before continuing!
Q:今何時ですか。What time is it now?
A:午後七時半です。/ 午後七時三十分です。It is 7:30 p.m.
Could you read that? Did you know what it meant? If so, you're doing great! If not, keep studying!
Q:何時ですか・。What time is it?
A:午前五時二十二分です。It is 5:22 a.m.
So that was pretty much the basics of time. Do you all know how to format times now? If so, tell me what time it is for you in Japanese. さようなら皆さん!
