The morning light was barely peeking through the windows when I was already pouring out my coffee. I was determined not to be late for work today. I was already dressed in knee length black dress adorned with lace around the waist. I had chosen a pair flats today, I figure I would doing a lot of running around and making up for yesterday. My hair was down in waves upon my shoulders. I looked at my watch and grabbed my satchel on the sofa. Pickles yipped and I ran back and poured kibble in his bowl.
“Sorry, I almost forgot boy.” I said to him as I rubbed his soft head.
I ran out and this time I made sure that the cabbie dropped me off at the right adress. As I paced into my office I waved at Eliza and Teresa. My phone was already ringing as I entered. It was Marya.
"Autumn? The models are here for a fitting. Bring in the clothes and make sure they are ready for the show this Saturday."
before I could reply the other line clicked off and she had hung up. I sighed as I picked up the clipboard at the end of my desk. I picked up the clothes from Eliza and made my way to a large room behind the stage. I hung all of the dresses up on the rack and ordered the models to stay in the room while they were given their clothes for the show.
I turned to leave when I heard a high pitched voice from behind me.
"Autumn! Hey! Remember me?"
I winced and turned back around.
"Oh! Veronica! Nice to see you again!" Stupid me, of course shes a model.
She walked cat like over to me with her long legs cutting through the air like blades. She kept smiling as she walked over. The other models behind her rolled their eyes and then went about their business.
"What a suprise, what are you doing here?" She asked
"I work here actually, I'm manager of events and of the business side of things." I said while trying to make myself seem taller, she was a couple inches taller than me and then she had heels on top of that.
She made an "o" with her mouth and pretended to be interested. She really was sweet but dim.
I smiled and made some excuse for me to leave. She smiled and said goodbye then I left. As I was walking back into the office room I ran into Dan.
"Oh! I'm sorry I was looking at the ground I didn't see you." I explained while he laughed a little.
"It's alright really, I was hoping I would run into you again...not this literally though." He smiled and I melted slightly.
"I've been wanting to talk to you. At the park...I was going to tell you that-" I cut him off.
"Yes, I know that you have a girlfriend. I just spoke with her actually, shes one of the models." I played with my nails as I spoke.
He looked at me as if he wanted to say something but again he stopped himself and let out a sigh.
"Autumn I really...I think you're....I've never met anyone like you...If I wasn't...I really shouldn't be saying this." He kept stumbling over his words and fiddling with his hands.
I blushed, "Dan, I-" this time he cut me off. He leaned in close and locked my gaze once more. His lips were inches from mine but he pulled apart just like last time.
"I can't, Autumn. I want to but..." He seemed torn but at least he was faithful.
My heart sank but this time I let it.
"Bad timing...yeah...I understand." I leaned against the wall. "Go, Dan. I'm sure shes been waiting for you." My voice dropped low at the end to barely a whisper.
"I'm sorry Autumn. If we had met sooner..." He trailed off
I laughed softly, mostly at myself for believing that he and I could happen, and excused myself. I walked the rest of the way into my office and didn't care to look back.
The rest off the day went by in a blur. I saw Veronica once more this time she hugged me and said she couldn't wait for the show. I smiled and agreed. Before I knew it, the clock was reading 3:00 PM and it was time for me to leave.
I gathered the sketches on my desk and filed them in a cabinet. I grabbed my leather satchel and walked out onto the sidewalk.
"I wonder if Phil is busy?" i thought aloud. I pulled out my phone and dialed. The phone rang and rang and then I heard his voice on the voicemail system.
"Hey, it's Phil. Sorry I didn't answer I'm probably busy slaying Dragons and saving the world. Leave a message and I'll get back to you!"
I laughed and then spoke into my phone.
"Hey Phil, its Autumn. Just wondering what you were up to, but it seems you're busy. Call me back when you can."
I sighed and wondered if he could help me figure out Dan.
