Checkmate

Some people keep an extra food supply in their dungeon. Some have washing machines in them. On a rare occasion, the space is turned into a cinema room. And on a very rare occasion, it is turned into a lab. Only in the life of a Luthor.

'Woah, Lena, this is amazing!'

'I know.'

I had no idea her scientific history was so serious. I thought they only had futuristic tech like this in movies. What catches my eye immediatly is what seems like a suit covered up with a blanket.

'Now, there is something I need to tell you.' Lena starts, 'Confess, even.' My heart starts racing. 'I have been keeping an eye on you since you went to high school. To be honest, you were one of the reasons I went to our school.' My eyes widen in shock, how could she have known I am Superman's cousin?

'In the Luthor family, chess has always been an important game. It taught me how to not only anticipate my next step in life but the step of others aswell so that I could react to that. I have done that for you. I knew Lex would escape prison to kill you. And how did he almost kill Superman? With Kryptonite. That's why I made you this.'

I am still to stunned to realise that the suit she is showing me is for me. It has pants and a helmet attached to a shiny dark grey torso. It has glints of red and it is absolutely beautiful.

'It has a Kryptonite shield on it so that he can't hurt you with that God awful substance. I hope it works but I am 99% sure it does.'

The concerned look on her face breaks me. Her eyebrows wrinkle and I think she is worried that she hasn't done enough for me yet.

'Lena, I don't know what to say.'

'I know, I shouldn't force you to fight him and I'm basically telling you to do so with this. I'm sorry, if you want-'

'Lena! I am going to fight him and this is the most amazing thing someone has ever done for me. I am so, so thankful.'

Lena is almost trembling and I rush to her to wrap her arms around her.

'I'm so scared I will lose you.'

'You won't, I promise.'

'But do you even know how to fight? No offense, but your cousin was way older and now Lex has gotten time to think about how- how to defeat you.'

'Did my cousin have a Kryptonite suit?'

Lena laughs a little and shakes her head that's on my shoulder.

'Then we have no time to waste and show that bastard never to underestimate his sister again.'

Lena pulls back to look at me and her eyes are filled with something that can only be described as love. She gives me a tender kiss and I close my eyes to enjoy the taste of her lips fully.

'I love you.' It feels so natural to say it to her.

'I love you too.'

I step into Lena's black sports car again and I feel a lot less excited than the first time I did. The suit feels tight underneath my clothes and it feels like I'm on my way to an important match I have to win. Lena puts her hand on my thigh and looks at me. We don't need words to talk.

Lena's POV

There is a loud ringing noise in my ear and my head thumps fast. I groan as I gain consciousness and try to grab my painful head. Except I can't. My hands are bound to a chair with tiewraps. My throat is dry so I try to swallow but gag because of the cloth that is in my mouth.

I try to remember how I ended up in this dark room but I have no idea. I only know that something must have hit my head. Or someone.

'I always liked Jack. He is smart and not too annoying. Such a shame you left him when he started getting serious about nanobot technology. Classical Lena, leaving when things get too tough, too real.' This voice, the condescending tone of it, can only come from one person, Lex Luthor.

He walks out of the shadows, towards me and, against my will, I begin to tremble a little. He smirks and then takes the cloth out of my mouth.

'Hello dear brother.'

'Hey sis, I'd love to catch up but there is something I need to show you.'

He walks towards a control system for what seems like ten tv's. Then I see Kara's face. That beautiful face. I gasp when I see the person fighting her. It's Lex.

'H-how?' I hate that there is a hint of curiosity in my voice.

'Image inducer, take it as a compliment.'

I scoff. Using my own invention against me. Against Kara, but that is basically the same as attacking me.

'You couldn't invent something yourself?'

'Oh, I have, I can't wait to hear what you think!' He mocks me by using the same tone I used as a child when I had 'invented' something. Lex would always laugh but still I kept trying. 'You should make them in pink', he used to say.

'You know, prison really makes you rethink your life. Was it wrong of me to try to kill Superman? Yes, yes it was. Why kill someone when you could control them?'

I flinch when I see Kara getting punched hard in the face. A tear rolls down my cheek.

'Oh. Oh, this makes it even better.'

He walks towards, grabs my face and traces the tear with his filthy finger.

'You love the alien.'

I spit in his face. His eyes shift in expression and I suddenly realise again what makes him so dangerous. He gives me a backhand, which I had already mentally prepared for. The spit was worth it though.

'You done?' He says and I know it's better for me to just nod.

'So I figured your ex-boyfriend could use some help with his technology. I told him the nanobots could be used for so much more than just medical purposes. He was interested until he no longer had a say in what he wanted. You see, I figured out how to not only let the nanobots heal the body but control it aswell.'

Fuck.

'And you used Jack as a test subject.' I finish, a lump forming in my throat.

'Yes, and look how great he is doing!'

My head goes numb. Tears are flowing freely now. Kara thinks she's fighting Lex, except it's Jack. A kind, free-spirited person.

'How could you?!'

Lex pretends to not have heard me.

'Why him? Well, he was the key. Literally the key to your house. Oh Lena, did you really think you could outsmart me with that suit and that 'protection system'. Face recognition. You really didn't even consider taking his face of your house's memory?

He looks at me expectantly but I am not giving him an answer like he desires.

'Well, he, or basically me, found out that you were making a Kryptonite suit. It worked perfectly, I have to give you that, but not after Jack sabotaged it. Oh look, speaking of which.'

He points at the television screens. The veins in Kara's veins have turned green and she is screaming in pain.

'Kara.' I whisper softly, but Lex heard it.

'Don't worry I'm not going to hurt her. Like I told you, why kill someone when you could control them? I'm just a simple man, I can't change the world alone. But when I have a Kryptonian in my possession, I could let everyone bow before me.'

My heart is racing with anger. My head is burning up. I want to kill him. I want to run him trough with a bullet and watch him bleed out slowly.

'You think you have won.' I say to him, coldly.

'I don't think, I know.'

I turn my head to hide my amused expression. He doesn't know anything.

He doesn't know I will be the one who plays checkmate.
