The Letter- Chapter One
Mr. and Mrs. Turner,
This letter is in regards about your eighteen year old daughter, Madelyn Turner.
Let us start off with the fact that we are in the process of trying to find a young and beautiful bride for our son, Blake Jones. In two years he is to take over the family company and all investments. My wife and I have come to the conclusion together that we will bring in fifteen eligible girls for Blake to choose from. This proves could take two weeks or as long as a year. Now, back to the concerns of your daughter, we find her quite exquisite and wish for her to partake in this wonderful adventure. We would make it well worth your while. Accepting this offer, you would be granted $50,000. If our Blake was to choose Ms. Turner, then you would always be satisfied, where money is concerned that is.
Also in this envelope is one plane ticket to where this exciting experience will be taking place. Please have Ms. Turner on the plane on March 10th at 8 a.m. if she wishes to attend.
Sincerely,
Randolph Jones
This was about the millionth time I had re-read this letter. It held my parents' future. Not mine. I had accepted this invitation only for my parents' sake. They needed the money and I was fine with taking a vacation, it's not like I'd ever in a million years get chosen. I was just a down home country girl with long blonde hair, dull green eyes, and natural tan skin.
I imagined the other girls being Miss USA or some beautiful other model. But here I was, on a plane headed to who-knows-where, meeting who-knows-who, yet I wasn't the least bit nervous. I grinned at the thought. I hadn't ever been a girl to be shy around guys or anything like that. I always told them what I thought, but was still very much a people pleaser- it was a complicated situation. And I definitely wasn't the type of girl to go searching for love and get all wishy-washy about some guy. No, that wasn't me at all.
I had decided on bringing Tuck, my two year old Siberian husky. He's been my buddy since I got him and I figured he could probably use a vacation too. At the thought of him I wondered how he was doing in the carrier I had put him in. He's never flown before so he may be a little worried.
Leaning my head back, I fell into a peaceful sleep. It felt so good to be relaxed.
"We are preparing to land, please fasten your seatbelts."
I awoke a couple hours later to the sound of the pilot making this announcement. I stretched my arms and rubbed the sleep away from my eyes.
Thirty minutes later I was walking into the airport looking around for somebody who looked rich- big mistake! Everyone in the airport looked rich. I inwardly groaned, this was going to take forever. I went and got my luggage and then found Tuck. He was so excited to see me. Together we walked over to a bench. Tuck laid down by my feet while I searched through my purse for my phone.
I was checking my e-mail when I heard someone clear their throat, making me immediately look up.
"Ms. Turner?" A man asked, there was a woman standing next to him, smiling.
"Yes." I said with a warm smile while jumping up. "And you must be Mr. and Mrs. Jones." I stuck my hand out and they both reached out to shake it.
"You must be tired, sweetie. We'll take you back to the house so you can get something to eat and take a nap." She paused, looked at Mr. Jones, and then continued, "Tonight we're having a banquet with a ball following so you can meet Blake and the other twelve girls, two declined our offer."
I started gathering up my stuff but Mr. Jones grabbed my luggage so all I had left was Tuck. I grabbed his leash and followed the Jones' to their vehicle.
Once we got outside I stood, amazed. I was expecting just a normal everyday car, but they had a limo.
Mrs. Jones turned around waiting at the door, "Is something wrong, dear?"
I quickly shook my head no, and hopped in the back beside her.
As we started driving I saw Mrs. Jones curiously looking at Tuck. "We didn't know you were bringing a dog, it's perfectly fine but- " she trailed off looking unsure of what to say next. "Well, what I meant was, is he house trained?"
I grinned. "Yes, most definitely."
No sooner than the words were out of my mouth, the car came to a stop. I looked out the window and a gasp escaped my mouth. This was not a house it was a castle. It must be I thought in wonder as I studied the masterpiece. It was huge, at least five stories tall. The place where we were parked in had neatly trimmed grass surrounding the pebble circle drive. And every here and there were beautiful bushes trimmed into funny looking spiral trees. It was truly beautiful. The thing about the place that made my breath catch in my throat though, was the man stand on the top of the steps with his hands together in front of him.
