The Letter- Chapter Four
Blake’s P.O.V.
Wow. Did she honestly just escape talking to me after I waited outside her door for what seemed like hours? This was unbelievable!
I stood up and dusted off my clothes, grabbing my jacket, I sprinted down the steps to find her.
Once outside, I saw her walking in the direction of the lake, and I instantly knew this was my chance to corner her. With the thought fresh in my mind, I ran back inside to grab what I would need.
“Blake!” As soon as the door shut, I could hear my name being called. “Blake!?...Oh, sweetie, Courtney’s waiting for you in your room, she told me she needed to talk to you before she headed to bed and I couldn’t find you, so I just sent her to your bedroom.” Mom said with a sly grin.
“What? Why would you do that?” Instantly my blood was boiling, all Courtney wanted to do was seduce me, and that was so not happening!
Mom just shrugged her shoulders and turned to leave. “Wait, mom. I’m busy right now so I won’t be going back to my room for a while.”
“Oh? Busy? With what, son?”
“Erm… I’m trying to get to know one of the girls…” I replied, not totally knowing how she would react.
Her face instantly lit up. “Oh, Blake! That’s excellent! Which one?”
I shrugged off all my worries. “Madelyn Turner. The last girl you brought today.”
“…Blake,” she furrowed her eyebrows at me, “Why are you getting to know her?”
I looked at her astonished, like she had just grown two heads. “Mom, you do know that we have thirteen girls here who are all trying to win my heart. Right?”
“I know that son! I am the one who invited them all if you haven’t already forgotten! But Ms. Turner is not here to even have a chance with you! Her dad and yours were best friends since they were kids, and your father wanted to help them out with, um… their financial issue, so I took it upon myself to invite her here.”
“So…?”
“I paid her to sign the contract so they wouldn’t feel like it was just charity.”
I looked down. This made no sense to me. Was Maddie not here to be possibly rewarded with my love? “Mother, I guess I don’t understand.”
She looked up at me with hard eyes, placing her lips in a firm line. “She will NOT be the one you choose. I will not have my son marrying a lowly farm girl. Do you understand me?”
“No. I don’t and I don’t think I ever will understand someone as self-centered as you.” Not waiting for her reply, I turned around; headed out the door I had just come from.
Looking around, I saw Maddie, sitting, with her feet in the water. I shook my head, not believing what I had just encountered with my mother.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
I looked down, seeing Tuck sitting by my legs, his tail beating the ground at a study rhythm. Grabbing a stick, I tossed it towards the lake, only to see him bounding off towards it, which surprisingly brought a grin to my face. He was free of any burdens and only cared for those who fed and played with him.
Madelyn’s P.O.V.
My mind kept racing back to the moment he had his arms securely around me. It had to stop I kept telling myself. All I knew about this man is he’s about 6’3, thick, black hair, and deep blue eyes. Good looking? Yes, most definitely. Player status? Most likely. But seriously what did I know about him? All he was to me was a mystery man, and an intruder to my vacation.
I sat down next to the bank by the water and put my feet in, I turned my head when I heard a noise to my right and immediately saw Blake looking at the ground with a slight frown on his face. My stomach flip flop and I scolded myself. Remember: player. Spell it out, P-L-A-Y-L-E-R. But when he looked up to meet my eyes all thoughts surrounded him, not that he was a player, but how incredibly gorgeous he is.
“Maddie, I just want to talk, please don’t run again. OK?” It was barely audible but I caught every word. His eyes were filled with pain and I didn’t know what to do. Standing up, I made my way over to where he was at and stood in front of him.
“Ok.” With that simple word, relief washed over his face, but I could still see some worry lines between his eyebrows. “What would you like to talk about then?”
“Well, three hours ago I wanted to ask you why you ran away from me during our dance; now I want to get to know you. Maddie, you intrigue me. I don’t know what it is about you but I want to find out every little bit that makes up who you are. Starting with, where you come from, who your family is, wh-“
“Hold on! One question at a time!” I exclaimed laughing, which to my surprise, brought a smile to his face, washing away all remains of earlier worry lines.
“Ok, ok. Umm…Where do you come from?”
I looked down at the ground, suddenly realizing I had nothing to compare to his life. I come from a family with nothing; he came from a family with everything. It was as simple as that, but complicated my life from every aspect. I hadn’t gone to college, because I knew if I were to have gone, that would only have lead up to another bill my parents would have to worry about, so instead, I spent my days in a local restaurant waiting tables.
“Maddie?” His voice was gentle, but I knew if I looked up at him the worry lines would be back in place.
“Blake, this is why I have run all day. I come from nothing except a field with animals and corn. I come from unpaid doctor bills and wanting and needing food. I have nothing and never will.” At the end I quickly turned around and walked over to the edge of the water, tears had sprung to my eyes and I desperately was trying to force them away.
“ I don’t understand-“
I cut him off before he could even finish, “Of course you don’t! All your life you’ve been handed everything you have every needed or desired. Not me. I’ve had to work for every cent we have.” I paused to take a breath, but he rushed in to finish.
“I don’t understand why you’ve run. Do you think of me so lowly as to judge you by how much money you have?”
“It’s not just that, Blake there are twelve beautiful women here, instead of going and talking to them, you come to me. I am not just some girl that will be used and thrown away; so stop playing around with me and go be serious with the models. And do me a favor, send me home A.S.A.P.” With that, I turned around, walking back to the house.
WAM!
Only to be tackled to the ground a few moments later.
Blake’s P.O.V.
She seriously thinks I’m going to judge her by how she’s grown up? As I was contemplating how to respond, I suddenly realized she wasn’t in front of me anymore. Quickly scanning the area, I saw she was making her way back to my parents’ house. There was no way I was going to let her escape thinking I’m such a jerk. I did the one thing I could think of, ran after her and placed her on the ground, with me on top of her.
“I am not judging you! Why on Earth are you so stubborn? I don’t know what kind of guy you think I am but before you start judging me you need to get to know me.” With that I walked back to the house frustrated at myself for losing my temper so easily.
