Halloween, the school was buzzing with excitement. The teachers allowed the students to dress up in costumes. Maelynn was dressed in a simple angel costume, Nashira was a cat, Lily was a devil. She and Maelynn were doing friend costumes. Sirius was a zombie, James was a quidditch player, and Remus didn't dress up. He said he was busy that night.
This made Maelynn's suspicions rise. It was nearing a full moon. And even after knowing Remus for a month, she wrote to her grandfather asking her to send a copy of his book on magical creatures. Which arrived in the morning.
She had her suspicions but wouldn't bring it up to him until after the business of Halloween was over. She didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. But at the same time she wanted to know. Something she unfortunately inherited from her grandfather, the desire to study, the desire to know more about something. It could be both a blessing and a curse. Her and Remus were set to meet in the library during study hall.
Maelynn was going to talk to him about it. But slowly. She wasn't going to overwhelm him. Maelynn wouldn't ever do that to her friends. But her train of thought was broken when she saw someone in front of her.
"Maelynn? Is this seat taken?"
Maelynn looked up and saw Remus, looking pale and not like his usual self. Maelynn straightened her posture and motioned for him to sit down.
"No of course not," Maelynn said, taking her DADA books out and scattering them on the table. Remus smiled and sat down.
After a while Maelynn put her hair up and secured it with her wand. Remus looked at the girl in amazement. But he quickly turned back to his work. They both shared ideas in their essays. Maelynn knew she had to bring up the topic to him but she wasn't sure how.
"I know about your secret," Maelynn whispered. Remus dropped his quill and turned to her. Red and nervous.
"I have no clue what you're talking about," Remus whispered back. Maelynn laughed and turned to him.
"I may be clueless sometimes but I'm the granddaughter to a world renowned magizoologist. I know a werewolf when I see one," Maelynn whispered. Remus paled and quickly gathered their things and he dragged her to Dumbledore's office.
Maelynn was confused as Remus took her to the headmasters office. Did she say something wrong? Did she hurt his feelings? Thoughts ran through her head. The two students stood in front of the headmasters office and they entered when they heard the headmasters voice. Maelynn gulped as she stood before the headmaster.
"Mr. Lupin, Ms. Scamander, to what do I owe the pleasure to two gifted students," Dumbledore said with a twinkle in his eye. Maelynn breathed in. This meant her suspicion was correct. Remus was indeed a werewolf.
"Headmaster, Maelynn knows of my lycanthropy," Remus said as the headmaster leant forward in his seat.
"Ms. Scamander, I knew it was only a matter of time. Especially with your grandfather's wits," Dumbledore said. Maelynn nodded. Then she turned to Remus.
"So my suspicion was correct?" Maelynn asked for clarification. Both Remus and Dumbledore nodded. Maelynn hugged Remus. Remus was shocked but hugged back.
"I'm not going to look at you any differently," Maelynn said and Remus smiled, breaking the hug. Dumbledore looked at Maelynn with that twinkle in his eye.
"You are just like your grandfather," Dumbledore spoke. Maelynn blushed as Remus led her out of the headmasters office.
That night Maelynn walked out of Hogwarts with Remus and Madame Pomfrey. Remus looked at her. Maelynn gave him a comforting smile.
"I'll be here when you come out," Maelynn spoke holding some warm blankets and books. Remus smiled and walked into the whomping willow. Madame Pomfrey smiled at Maelynn before walking up to the school. Maelynn set up a small area near the tree. She set down her things and started a small fire and read until she fell asleep. But only sleeping once she felt comfortable and only for two hour periods. When she wasn't sleeping she was listening to the sounds of howling and watching for others. She didn't want Remus' secret to get out, he could be forced to leave the school.
Maelynn couldn't watch one of her closest friends leave. Then her mind wandered. What would happen if the others found out. Nashira might freak out, as she doesn't know about a lot of magical creatures. James and Sirius would think it's a joke or something. And Peter. Maelynn didn't really like him, he gave her a negative aura. Or a dark cloud. So she didn't really hang out with him, but will tolerate him.
And when she woke up the next morning she saw Remus emerge from the tree. Maelynn quickly got up and saw the wounds he had. Nothing serious, just some cuts here and there. Maelynn quickly gave him some chocolate and bandages. Remus thanked the girl and they both walked up to the castle for breakfast.
