Chapter 2- Crazy or not?

I made no response. After being here for six years, even I was starting to question my sanity. I know I'm not crazy and that the nightmares are not just a part of my imagination. But after seeing Drew in my dreams and then, standing before me, I wasn't so sure.

"I only have a few seconds until that camera comes back on but I do hope you know you're not crazy." He tried again. I nodded fervently, not letting my insecurities show. He looked pleased that I had responded and continued, "Your dreams are not regular nightmares, as you have probably figured out. I will explain more later when we are in a more secure area." He tilted his head towards the camera, "For now though, that's the most important thing. You need to know that you're not crazy and there is a reasonable explanation for everything. You do understand right?"

I nodded again but cocked my head to the side in confusion. He shook his head and said nothing more on the matter.

Dr. Michaels poked his head through the door, asking, "All done in here?" When we nodded he walked in and plopped into his chair. Sighing he continued, "Alright Miss Mattson, Dr. Billings was sent here for a reason. Since your birthday is tomorrow, Dr. Billings here was judging how well treatment went and what institute you will go to when you are eighteen. I assume you've come to a conclusion then Dr. Billings?" If tomorrow was my birthday, then days passed more quickly than I thought. I mused on that for a few seconds before realizing what he meant.

I looked to Drew in confusion. He grimaced and nodded saying, "I was sent here to determine how strong your case was and which institute you will be remaining at. Doc," he replied turning to look at Dr. Michaels, "Should she really be in here while we are discussing this?"

Dr. Michaels snorted and then seemed to gain back his professional mask.

"Since this concerns her, she will stay. Also, it's not like she will protest to anything we say so carry on." He exclaimed, chuckling at his little joke.

This response gained didn't gain a reaction from me; I had long since ignored the hateful comments. Drew however looked surprised but quickly hid behind a cough.

"Umm... Okay. Well, I think her case is not as strong as we feared. I think she should go to my personal hospital to be cared for." Drew stated, back to business.

Dr. Michaels eyebrows shot up, "Your hospital? That's for special cases only, why would she go there instead of the St. Athes Insane Asylum?"

"Well, for one thing, I don't think she's insane. She might just have an unusually high case of schizophrenia and depression. Throw in some suicidal thoughts and you have what she's going through. Besides Doctor, I think she is a very special case." He looked at me and winked. What the heck does that mean?

"Alright, it's settled. Tomorrow Miss Mattson will be moved to the SC Hospital. Miss Mattson?" My head snapped up to look at Dr. Michaels. "You will go back to your psychiatrist and get a good night sleep tonight." He commanded as a nurse walked in and grabbed my arm.

Drew flashed me a smile but I was too numb with shock and amazement. I wasn't going to the Insane Asylum! For once in my life, since the dreams stared, someone believed I wasn't crazy.

---------------

Bright green flashed once more as I was transported to my nightly terror. The bodies weren't there anymore but the smell of burning flesh clogged my throat. I coughed feeling the air thick with smoke and ash. I couldn't see anything at all. I listened for a clue as to what was happening but all I could hear was my own dry rasping as I tried to breath. Feral growls erupted from all around me. It seemed as I was twisting and turning to look around, as if the Thing was here. Shockingly enough, I could feel the presence of not one but a pack of them. I figured there was about seven or eight surrounding me. Starting to feel fuzzy from the lack of oxygen, I dropped to my knees.  The growling grew in pitch and I knew nothing good would come from this dream. Suddenly the growling stopped and a high pitched ringing filled the air. I could no longer sense the pack but I felt another presence close by.

The presence drew closer and I immediately recognized who it was. Drew had saved me once again.

Drew knelt by me and pulled me into a hug. Immediately I could breathe, but the fuzziness still wouldn't leave.

"Come on Bree! Don't lose yourself now! Come on, tomorrow you'll be just fine, as long as you stay awake!!" he yelled, getting worried.

"Ugh shut up! I can hear just fine, without you screaming at me. I'm just a little fuzzy, that's all." I replied getting annoyed.

Drew just sat there, speechless. Exasperated, I sat there in silence, waiting for him to speak up.

Finally he asked, "Why do you speak now and not when I met you earlier?"

"Everyone there thinks I'm crazy. I tried constantly to convince them that I wasn't crazy, but after awhile I just gave up speaking all together." I stated matter-of-factly.

He nodded but said nothing more. I was beginning to think that was a habit of his. Not speaking when I most wanted to hear what he had to say. Darkness clouded my vision for a few seconds, making me gasp with the sudden pain.

Drew jerked upright and grabbed hold of me.

"Are you alright? Did they Raayka's get you at all? Are you hurt?" He asked all these questions so fast; I was starting to get a head ache.

"Whoa there buddy. Calm down. Raayka's? No, I'm not hurt; I just don't feel all that well." I said slowly but sighed soon after.

He relaxed but still stayed alert as if expecting the worse to happen.

"I'll explain all of this tomorrow when we meet again. For now, please try to get some sleep." He said evasively.

I could feel the pull back to the present but I quickly voiced the question I've had since I first saw him, "So you really do see all of this. I'm not just imagining you here?"

He chuckled darkly, mumbling, "Nope. This is all real. Unfortunately."

The pull was becoming too much and I had to go back. Waving he stepped away, as that world faded away.

I awoke to find myself without any new wounds but covered in ash.

That was one thing to look forward too. I now knew that maybe these nightmares weren't just dreams but actually happened and I knowing that now, I needed answers. The only way I could get them would be from Drew. For once in my life, I looked forward to my birthday.
