The Faceless World- Change-

Darkness was holding a tight grip on me. I wanted to wake up but my mind was foggy and I couldn’t remember how I had gotten in this state.  All I heard was the word ‘Areci’ but maybe I heard it wrong. It sounded so familiar, the word, the duty of being a Sceeric Conductor. I swear someone had told me that before.  For once, while I slept, there were no Raayka’s lurking to hurt me. I knew I was safe for a little while at least, as long as I stayed unconscious.  I wasn’t eager to wake up to the world full of anger and ridicule. A world where I wasn’t welcome, and would be shipped off to hospital after hospital, no one really caring. Then again, there was Drew. I didn’t know much about the guy but he seemed like he could truly care. Although, I have met enough people who all seemed trustworthy and loyal. They all turned out to be the worst back stabbers.

The sound of someone mumbling broke my out of my thoughts. I was starting to come back to reality. I was sad to go back to this horrible world but strangely I was also impatiently excited. The thought of Drew explaining more to me left me wanting to hear more.

The mumbling grew louder and I could start to make out the words.

“Bree…” It whispered.

“Bree… You’ve got to wake up. I know it’s a lot to take in but I haven’t even finished half of it.”

There were other people behind this mumbling.

“Her names Bree?”

“Well, what happened?”

“Is she alright? You didn’t hurt her did you Drew?”

The mumbling stopped and instantly turned into a fierce protest.

“What, ofcourse not!”

I could make out a girl and three guys, including Drew. They all sounded so worried. Maybe I should wake up just to get all of the attention off of me.

Shaking slightly, I peeled open my eyes. Seeing faces right above me, I flinched back. Instantly they stepped back, all but the girl that is. Her short pixie cut blonde hair stuck up in every direction. She was tall but looked as if she could break with one small trip. Her sky blue eyes sparkled as she squeezed me hard, making my eyes pop out under the pressure.

“Oh, sorry!” Relinquishing her strong grip, she sat down on the edge of the bed. “I’m Gina. Welcome to the crew!”

I nodded tersely.

Instantly she frowned.

“Do you not want to say hi back or tell me your name?” she asked sadly.

Drew spoke up. “She can’t or won’t speak, at least not in this world. Besides Gina, you already know her name. It’s Bree Matson.”

Exasperated she shook her head. “Of course I already know her name! It’s still polite to say it.”

“Ignore Gina, I’m Scott.” A really tall but handsome man stood in front of me. He was about 6’ 3” and had a muscular build. His light brown hair was short and spiked, showing off his dazzling pale green eyes.

The man beside him was the total opposite. He was on the shorter side, compared to Drew and Scott but was still 5’ 11”. He nodded in hello, sending his black hair tumbling into his face. Dark hazel eyes peeked out shyly from under his hair.

“I’m Skylar.”

I nodded hello to each one and then turned to Drew.

He nodded. “I don’t think it’s wise to continue our conversation now. We’ll let you rest a bit and then I’ll tell you everything.”

I nodded once more. It seemed like that was all I was doing lately.

“Let’s leave her alone and let her catch up on her sleep.” They all sighed but complied to Drew’s wishes, mumbling goodbye as they left. Drew was the last to leave.

“I don’t know why you passed out when I told you what I did, but don’t worry about it. Just get some sleep and we’ll talk tomorrow.” He grabbed my hand and squeezed.

He quickly let go and was about to leave but I grabbed his hand. I shook my head and mimicked the motion of writing.

He grabbed a piece of paper out of his pocket and grabbed a pen off of the side table.

And so with all these years of silence, I broke it with a few words.

Please don’t leave. I’m afraid.

It hurt my pride to say that but I really was afraid, more like terrified. I wanted him to stay. Every time I was alone, I ended up hurt. I didn’t want that to happen.

“There’s no need to be afraid. You’re safe here.”

Every time I sleep I meet those monsters. How is this time any different? I don’t want them to get me!

“It’s different because this time, I’m here. I won’t let them get to you, don’t worry.”

Won’t they get you too? I… I don’t want you to die.

“Just don’t worry. The Raayka’s won’t get me. Will it make you feel better if I stay here with you tonight?”

I nodded and he gave me a warm smile. He moved to sit in the seat next to the bed. I gave him a weak smile before closing my eyes. I don’t know why but having him here actually made me feel better. It was probably unwise but I trusted him already.

All in one day everything has changed. I moved hospitals, broke my vow of silence, and trusted someone, all which I have never done since I first arrived at the Mental Ward. I wasn’t sure if all this change was good or bad but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.
