"That's not what it means" Denzel insists for the hundredth time, while Jake just calmly opposes him everytime.
"That's totally what it means bro"
"Rex. Tell him that's not what it means"
"If I tell him that's not what it means, I'll only be doing it because you asked me to tell him that that's not what it means, not because it's actually not what it means"
"Huh?"
"You lost him Rex" Jake mocks
"Here. Have some fries" I try to make Denzel feel better as I push my lunch tray over to him which he happily accepts.
We are currently sitting in the cafeteria and lunch is almost over. Denzel spent more than half of it arguing with everyone at our table on the fact that MIA doesn't actually mean Missing In Action but that it means something else. Something he can't remember but he is positive is the full meaning of MIA.
For someone with a GPA as high as his, Denzel actually makes me question his IQ level sometimes.
You'd be surprised at how excellent we actually are when it comes to academics.
Jake is the brainiac of the group as he is always in line for class valedictorian but always falls behind some girl. Out of the three of us, I think he is the one who was born book smart, as anything involving numbers comes natural to him.
As for Denzel, he has a photographic memory. He doesn't need to study too much to understand. While I am just generally smart because I pay attention both in and out of class. And my insomnia gives me plenty of time to cover most of my material before the teachers even get to teach it."So Austin. Are we still on for tonight?" Jordan asks from across the table.
Like every cliche highschool with a social pyramid, the golden kids of clever king get their own table in the cafeteria which is situated at an elevated angle of the hall, overlooking the lower levels of the social pyramid.
I don't really care about all that. If it was entirely up to me, I would sit on a table with only my two best friends hidden from the view of onlooking wanna-bes. But Jake and Denzel care about things like sticking to the status quo like we are in some version of high school musical's East High.
I would beg to differ but sadly, they won't let me have it any other way. It would really help if I wasn't captain of the team. And honestly, I wouldn't have a problem if we didn't have to share the table with the cheerleaders and the girlfriends of some of the guys on the team.
That's why most days, I prefer to go eat out during lunch since cafeteria food tastes like shit anyways. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to let my best friends have their moment of shine with the others from time to time. So.... here we are.
"Of course. It'll be the party of the year. Pre-prom celebration and all that" Austin brags and the guys cheer him on.
"Nice" Jordan says, giving his best friend a high five. "But you know my girl still takes the crown for best parties of the year" he boasts then leans over to kiss Alexis on the lips. I just watch them silently as she smirks proudly while everyone on the table agrees with Jordan including Austin.
It's true. Everyone knows Alexis Summers throws the biggest parties in town. And you only get in on special invite. People who are not of her class only dream of being invited.
