I wake up the next morning to the sound of my phone alarm. I quickly turn it off so as to not arouse Clay, and get out of bed. I feel awful. I didn't get much sleep last night. I guess I was too worried that Clay was going to come in and kill me. Suddenly, my brain wakes with a start. All of my things are at my house! I only had my math homework because I planned to do it at the beach! I tip toe as quietly as I can down the stairs and grab a slip of paper and a pen, telling Clay where I was.
Hey Clay. I'm at school. I'll be back around 3:15. If you need me, here's my number. xxx-xxx-xxxx Have a good day!

Content with the note, I leave it at the table and leave the house, closing the door quietly behind me. I'll be just at the bell if I do make it in time. I start heading at a full sprint towards my house.
I get there in fifteen minutes, panting. The air is cold, as it's very early in the morning. I quickly put in the code for the door and it makes a rhythmic beep, and I sprint inside and up to my room, lugging my backpack onto my back and taking other necessities, grabbing a mealy apple for breakfast on the way and heading out, locking the door on my way out. I can't run as fast with my heavy bag, but I speed walk down the road, checking my watch constantly. I'm going to be a bit late.
I finally see my classroom down the hall, throwing the apple core into the trash and going through the door, trying not to attract attention. I'm fifteen minutes later.
"Where have you been, Maisy?" an old woman with white hair by the name of Miss Baker snaps. The entire class of very bored looking seniors stare at me.
"I, uh, had to go back to get something, so sorry. Please continue, Miss," I say politely, rushing over to my seat.
"No!" Miss Baker says. The entire class looks up at her, surprised. "You won't get out of it that fast! You were very late, young woman!" She's never like this. I'm a bit worried. "Where were you?" she asks, slowly, in a very scary voice.
"I got to the school, and then I had to go home to get something," I whisper, sitting down nervously.
"That is the third time this trimester you have been late. Actually, the third time in the last two weeks. I think you need to talk to the principal," Miss Baker says. Oh no.
"Y-yes, Ma'am," I whimper.
"I will take you down. Everyone, please be good while we are gone," Miss Baker leads me down the hall. I'm shaking. I've never gotten in this much trouble, in my life. I really want to run back to Clay's house and I want him to drive me to the mountain where we can hang out together again.
The office is fairly small, and behind the desk is a very short, fat man with a bald head and pale skin, Mr. Farsman. He beckons us inside, asking Miss Baker what the problem is.
"Maisy has been late three times the past two weeks, and I know that means suspension," Miss Baker states. I gasp. Suspension? No.
"You are correct. Shall I call the parents?" Mr. Farsman says without a second thought. Miss Baker nods eagerly. "Okay. Do you have a phone? May you call them?" I nod and take my phone out. I see a couple texts from a random number.

hey Maisy, its clay
i just wanted to say that i got ur note
have a good day, and text me if u need anything :)I smile at that, then look back up at the principal. He is staring at me. I call my mom. After two rings, it goes to voicemail. She pressed decline. I call my father, and his also stops after a couple rings and goes to voicemail. This isn't good.
"They didn't pick up," I tell the principal.
"Did you walk here?" he asks. I nod my head. "Then you can walk home. Tell your parents to call if they need to speak. Begone." I scoff inwardly. How could a principal of all people say that? Insane. I walk out of that place without another word, tears threatening to come to my eyes. Where would I go? Home, or to Clay's? Would he be mad if I told him? Then I'm crying, full out, and I sit down on the curb, across from Clay's house.
