I stared at the man behind me for a good ten seconds before the guard who had checked me in came to my rescue.

"Captain Sorensen, she's new. Besides, she's Ghost Tear, it's obvious that she's never seen people like us before." He said, only for the man to turn and growl at him.

"Silence yourself, Lieutenant Moren. Ghost Tear are known for being intelligent, or at least that's what their alpha claims. I'm merely seeing if she lives up to these claims." He said the words so harshly; a savage grin on his face as he looked down on me as though I was nothing more than a tiny pup in front of him.

My heart was racing in my chest, as though it could hardly believe that there was a real life New Blood leader in front of me at the moment. Sure I was always a confident girl, but even my confidence had its limits.

I really truly had no place here once I started to think about it.

Wait.

His name.

Captain Sorensen.

Well fuck.

Of course it was my luck to not only run into the Alpha's third in command, but to also succeed in pissing him off.

He reached forward and held my face in one surprisingly soft hand. "Darling, can you hear me?" His words sent chills down my spine, and it was all I could do not to shrink down in front of him.

"I can hear you just fine, sir. I apologize for the disturbance," I mumbled, keeping my eyes down like the good little girl I was.

His laughter chilled me, as he pulled his hand away from my face and patted my shoulder lightly. "I take it back, I like this one. I truly hope you aren't eaten or killed on your first day," he mused, his light eyes studying me.

He was tall and had clearly been lanky at one point, but all of that had been replaced with firm muscle that I could see through his uniform. There was still something off about him. Something that bothered me.

Captain Sorensen didn't belong here.

As he stood in front of me with all of his perfection, I couldn't help but wonder what it was that was so off about him?

His eyes marked him as different. New Blood wolves had silver and grey eyes, his pretty green eyes stood out.

A former recruit, just like me. A transfer from another pack.

His look still didn't make sense though, as no pack had green eyes and blonde hair. He had to be a halfbreed. That was only more confusing. New Blood wolves rarely mated with others from outside of their own pack. They looked down on halfbreeds, and even forbid the transfers from taking a mate.

How Captain Sorensen had made it so high in the ranks was a mystery to me?

He cleared his throat loudly, and made me jump, jolting my thoughts and forcing me to look at him.

"Thank you, I guess?" He laughed once at my words and then pulled away from me.

"Get on the bus, recruit. You won't last one day in this pack," he said in a none too warm voice.

Now that was pushing it. I had been bullied my entire life by people who were supposedly so much stronger than me. If I was going to die here in the New Blood Trials, then what did it matter if I spoke up for once.

"You're wrong about me."

Sorensen froze and stood with his back to me. I couldn't tell whether he was in shock, or just extremely angry with my defiance.

When he turned around, he had a smile on his face. "I was right, I do like you. Now shut your damn mouth and get on the fucking bus," he snapped. And on that note, he turned away again and left me staring at him.

Everyone was looking at me now. They all stood a safe distance away from me, and more importantly from Captain Sorensen. I could almost hear their gossip from where I was standing.

What a laughing stock I must look like, already getting into an argument with one of the top wolves in the pack. I had to stand still for another minute to try and patch some of my dignity back together.

The man who had checked me in earlier sent a sympathetic smile my way. Sorensen had called him Lieutenant Moren. I needed to make it a mission to learn his first name eventually. I needed to thank him for standing up for me, and a strong friend couldn't hurt either.

I took a deep breath and pulled myself up tall as I walked to the buses waiting for us in the parking lot. This was really happening, and there was no turning back now.

I could hardly believe it. I had found her already.

For some reason I thought that finding the alpha's mate was going to be hard or something. Of course I should've expected her to come with the same spitfire personality as the New Blood Alpha himself.

"Alpha Tristan, I found her. She's here with the other new recruits, just as you thought she would be." I sent the link out to him, hoping his wolf would pick up on my own trying to contact him.

For a normal wolf, my presence in their mind would be enough to send chills down their spine, but not Tristan. The alpha knew how to handle my wolf and his thoughts very well.

Years of practice had honed our ability to speak to each other without even opening our mouths, or even being near each other.

I couldn't help but wonder if I should link Logan in on this. The Beta wolf would be bitter if he didn't know that I had found the Alpha's mate. He had been sent out on a border patrol, while I had gotten the treat of going out to meet the new recruits.

After a few more moments of silence from Tristan, I decided that it couldn't possibly hurt to have a quick chat with my good friend. It didn't seem like Tristan was in the mood for talking today.

"Logan, I think I found Tristan's mate." The New Blood Beta didn't respond to my link with silence like Tristan had. His vice rang through my head within seconds.

"Holy shit, Sorensen! Do you really think it's her? What's she like? What does she look like? Is she strong? What pack is she from?" I shook my head a little bit to try and sort through all of the questions he'd asked me.

"Calm down, Logan. I still don't know for sure if it's her. She's a Ghost Tear. Pretty eyes and pretty hair, though she doesn't really look like her pack mates. A halfbreed maybe? Either way she's brave. The girl challenged me in front of everyone. I knew right then and there she had to be the one that Tristan dreamed of. He said she was a spitfire. That girl is a spitfire." Logan's emotions washed over me quickly, a mix of excitement at the idea of meeting his new Luna, but also jealousy. I understood that jealousy well.

Logan and I were both older than Tristan, and both of us had yet to find our true mates. Most wolves didn't even think that Tristan would deserve a mate. Many assumed it would be the punishment for his crimes.

We still had to be happy for him. Perhaps finding his mate would soften him around the edges and make him a better alpha.

"I'll be glad to meet her. Lupus knows Tristan needs someone else in his life. Take good care of her, Tyler." I allowed Logan to feel my agreement as another presence filled my mind. Logan felt it and backed out right away.

Tristan had gotten my message.

"Carry on with introductions as normal. Bring her to my office first thing tomorrow morning. I'm out working on something. Don't fuck this up or I'll have your head." His threat made me chuckle out loud a little. Some of the soldiers around me glanced up with confused looks.

I waved them off briefly and continued walking on. This year's trials were already proving to be interesting.
