Now, this one happened, approximately, ten years ago, if I'm not wrong. Setting; Nigeria.
"Wow, look how Tom and Jerry floats with umbrellas!" little me told my cousin, Jeffery. He looked at me and smiled, saying, "I know, right? It's so cool—"
"What if. . ." I began, turning my head to the single umbrella standing beside the front door. "What if we tried it out?"
"Like floating with the umbrella?" he asked, eyes widened.
I affirmed by nodding, vigorously.
Now, note, he's six years older than me — only problem was that we were both cartoon freaks; and I mean that.
Jeffery is my favorite cousin; he was an awesome inventor and artist at that little age. He'd even sketched my mum at about that age, and had won an award in school for drawing his favorite teacher, a year before then. He looked down the four storey building we were situated, and observed the flow of the wind for a few seconds before saying, "It's just perfect. For landing, the topography is leveled."
I nodded, despite not knowing what it meant, as far as he said it was okay, then it was. We opened my cabinet and drew out two wrappers for superhero capes; strapping it round our necks.
Note guys, Mum was not around because of an emergency call at work, so we were just left to ourselves at the moment. And Dad was not in Lagos city at that moment. Jeff constructed a quick paper mask for us — he'd memorised every single step in his 100 THINGS TO MAKE WITH PAPER book. We wore on our masks and walked majestically to the balcony, me feeling like the Hulk, him feeling like Superman.
The evening rays from the sunset shone against our faces; I remember my teeth were gritted. Jeff pumped his biceps, I'm sure he thought they were as big as Superman's, but honestly. . .
We helped ourselves to stand on the the structure at the balcony in such that we felt ourselves invigorated by the rushing wind; we were always resolute right from time, concerning our practicals, just in case you're wondering why we weren't afraid of height. Jeff opened the umbrella, and I held on to it with him. We lightened our mind and heart, our feet were about to pull off the earth when. . .
Grrr. . .
The door rang. We retracted our feet from the balcony and went to get the door. It was Mum's besty, Anti Kome. She had a warm smile on as she saw our attire.
"Hey boys!" she said with a slight handwave.
We responded, "Howdy, ma'am."
"Mum said I should get you both since she'll be coming home late." I could hear Jeffery grumble under his breath.
"Proof, please," I said. She nodded, then called Mum so I could speak with her.
We went to her house and had a nice time, you see she had lots of toys in her house. But that's not the point; she saved our lives! God bless my mother for that credit, and Anti Kome for coming on time.
Last two years when I went to visit my cousin Jeffery at his home in Park view estate, Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria, we were in his room when he reminded me about the incident. You should see how hard I laughed; it was unbelievable! That was so stupid, and to think we were smart kids😂.
At times, it's good to let our kids and younger fellas understand that literally everything they watch in TV are just fantasies and can never happen.
I told him we were so fortunate — yes, fortunate — such that the thought never came to our minds after that day to continue our project; which was odd for Salvin and Jeffery.
It's a funny thing we all had days when we almost lost our lives. Just imagine there was no Salvin Sawyerr, life would have been so incomplete!
Now note guys, this is not fantasy, every word — maybe not every though — are true.
I really love the fact that God saved us, it's amazing. Just in case you have a story, never restrict yourself from telling the world, it's someone's motivation.
However, don't forget I'm still your one and only motivator, thank God I've finally acquired a real super power. As you already know, I'm the Ink Lord, but legends know me as Salvin Sawyerr. Keep your heads high for more adventure of this hero.❤️
