Tommy?!
Techno nodded and I could tell we both had the same thought. Was that Tommy? He was sound asleep when we left, but we are the only ones ever out here. We both took off in the direction of the old mine, worried that Tommy had followed us and ran into the mine. The mine, one nice and clean, was now usually occupied by skeletons and strays who loved to hide in it during the day, and usually stayed in at night as well.
Techno grabbed an old torch sitting right inside the mine and hit it against the solid gravel wall, causing it to light. We both then ventured deeper into the mine, trying to find where the screaming was coming from.
There was a small room about a quarter of the way down the mine, meant for storing cobble and ores while Phil would mine. We came closer to it, the screaming seeming to come from the room. Techno made it to the old, rusted, iron door first, with me close behind. The door had become opened just enough for a small kid to fit through it, but wouldn't easily open anymore. Techno slammed against the door, making it open about an inch more. Again he slammed against it, with me trying to push it as well. We managed to get it open a bit more, but Techno couldn't slip through it.
Me being younger, I was a tad smaller than him, so I ran in front of him and tried to squeeze through the opening. I barely managed to slip through and turned around, Techno handing me the torch.
"Be careful." He knew he couldn't get the door open anymore, so he would have to wait there for me.
"I will." I turned and ventured further into the large room, trying to find the kid. There was no one in the storage room, no monsters and no kid. That's odd, there's normally always mobs in this room. I kept walking across the room, wondering if they were in the small bedroom in the corner.
The yelling kept getting louder as I got closer and closer to the bedroom. I heard a few skeletons and maybe a stray in there, shooting their bows at something. I quickly burst through the door, the oak door easier to open than the rusted iron one. There were three skeletons and a stray in there, turned toward the bed. I could see the small outline of a kid under the bed, tucked as far into the corner as they could get.
"Hey boneheads, over here!" I yelled at the skeletons, trying to get their attention. They all turned toward me, and quickly began aiming their bows. Using the shield, I got closer to the first skeleton and stabbed it with my sword a few times, making it collapse to the floor in a pile of bones.
I turned my attention to the next one, running up to it before it had time to shoot and killing it. I winced, feeling an arrow pass right by my shoulder, so close it cut through skin. I used my shield to block its next arrow and then lounged at it, my sword going right through its head. Its thin bones instantly collapsed into a pile on the ground. I looked around, trying to see where the stray was. In the fight, I dropped the torch and it had gone out. The room was almost pitch black. I couldn't see where the stray was and it seemed to be quiet. Damn it, where is that stupid thing! I knew it wouldn't be good if the stray hit me, as their arrows were dipped in a slowness potion.
I almost fell over, an arrow coming from behind me and hitting me in my lower arm. My sword fell out of my hand, the pain making it hard to hold it. Shit, this isn't good. I looked around for my fallen sword, but couldn't see it through the darkness. Another arrow came straight me, but I was able to block it with my shield before it got too close. Crap what do I do...?
I heard the kid crying in the corner under the bed, probably hurt and scared. Come on Will, pull it together. You gotta get this kid out of here. With a newly found determination, I waited a moment, waiting for the next arrow to be shot, waiting to see where it came from.
As expected, another arrow was shot. I blocked it with my shield again, but payed attention to where it came from. My eyes were finally adjusting to the darkness, and I if I focused hard enough, I could see a dim outline of a skinny creature. Gotcha.
I ran in the direction of the stray before it could get another arrow loaded. Keeping my momentum going, I leapt up in the air, both feet off the ground, and slammed the shield with my body behind it into the stray. It caused it to fall over and some of it's bones fell apart. The stray tried to get up, but before it could I drove the edge of my shield against its skull, killing it.
Holy crap that hurt like hell. I slowly got up, using the shield to balance some of my weight on it. When a landed against the stray, my leg hit the arrow it was about to load into the bow. Looking down, I saw the tip of an arrow sticking out of my leg, along with one in my arm. That's not gonna be fun.
I quickly moved my focus away from my injures to the kid cowering under the bed. I walked toward the bed, still having to use the shield to hold some of my weight. "Ey, kid, it's alright, they're gone now. Come on, lets get you out of here." I looked under the bed to be met with bright, round, blue eyes. The kid, a young boy that looked to be around Tommy's age, slowly came out from under the bed, still shaking. He seemed to be alright, with just a few scratches here and there. He's a lot better off than I am at least.
The boy stood, and within seconds came up right beside me and leaned his head into my side. He was shaking with fear, and also because it was cold. "You're gonna be alright now." We began walking out, having to go slowly due to my leg.
The storage room seemed bigger than before, walking across it to the door becoming harder with each step. After what felt like hours, I saw some light coming from a crack in the wall. The door. We finally made it. I could see glimpses of Techno's long, pink hair swishing behind him as he stabbed a lonely skeleton that had tried to challenge him.
The boy ran through the door, being able to easily fit through the thin gap. Techno spun around, to be met with the boy running into his arms. That poor kid..
Techno looked through the door way, squinting his eyes until he could make out my limping outline. "Will?" He came as close to the door as he could, getting to it about the same time I did.
"Ey Techno, is the kid alright?" I slowly slid through the door way, trying not to get the arrow in my leg caught on anything. It took a minute, but I managed to slip through, leaning over the shield. I'm so tired.
"Will, are you alright?" Techno looked at me, concern filling his face. I saw him lock eyes with both the arrows sticking out of my skin.
"Just peachy.." I muttered, feeling the darkness slowly take over as my body became limp and headed straight for the ground.
