The music floating from the ballroom was beautiful, as well as almost pure drops of rain upon the art canvas. Gowns of silk and taffeta ribbons adorning the women as they were led to and fro from the dance floor, the men upon their arms dressed in waistcoats of emerald and blue, their hair kept in perfect position and the smiles on their faces indicating that they were indeed enjoying the lady's company. Yet no one could assume that each dancing match would equal to a courtship, or even a likeable friend. Every dance was a first impression, a chance to show the very best of oneself and determine if they could see leading their partner onto the dance floor even after the memories of this night were one of the past.
Jameson entered into the room, looking upon the patrons as they drank themselves into a frenzy and laughed their conversations into oblivion, passing compliments and even little insults as challenges to the fairer or masculine sex, seeing how they could bounce back. His curled brown hair was slicked back, the scent of cedarwood and tobacco upon his coat and his eyes containing a certain charm to them as he took it all in, yet the inside of him was very obviously wishing to be elsewhere. Maybe in a library reading a good book or deciding on where he would venture off to for his travel. Somewhere that the water seemed to stretch on forever and the grass was always green, fresh. His paradise, so to speak.
"Jamie, old boy!" a voice said from a nearby corner, belonging to a young man with shaggy blonde hair and bright green eyes, his build almost athletic and on his arm was a woman nearly identical to himself, to which Jamie could only groan under his breath. These were the last two people that he wanted to see when he was already miserable, but before they could notice his irritation, he plastered on a charmed face and chuckled before approaching them and taking the man's hand, giving it a firm shake before bowing his head to the woman. "Daniel, Sarah....it's so nice to see you both here. How was the trip to Africa?" he asked, although it was quite clear to anyone else who knew him that he was far from interested.
The man, Daniel, laughed and withdrew his hand. "It was educational, if I must say. Who knew that elephants mourned the loss of one of their own for months...MONTHS! Almost like they were human than mammal." he said, reaching out to grab a nearby glass of champagne and bringing it over to his lips. He was like Jamie in the sense of enjoying travel and broadening the horizons, but they were also very different in others too. Some that Jamie wished he could not be compared to the man at all for. Sarah, observing Jamie like he was a piece of cake than a full grown man, batted her eyelashes and waved her hand across her dress.
"Jamie, what do you think of my dress? Isn't it gorgeous? I got it from the dressmaker in the village! She said pink is all the rage." her high pitched voice proclaimed, Jamie's eyes meeting her own and he knew that he had to bite down on his tongue hard so that he wouldn't let slip of what he actually was thinking. What was a little white lie, however? Giving her a smile and tightening his hands behind his back, he sighed. "It is.....unlike anything I have ever seen. You really like to make a statement, Lady Sarah." That was as good as she was going to get and he knew he and Daniel would have yet another pointless chat about marrying her. Sarah was revolting, in every sense of the word and Jamie could imagine the horrors of being her husband, having to see and cater to her consistently. It made his stomach turn inside out. When he heard the music ending and the sounds of clapping echoing throughout the hall, he took that as the perfect moment to disappear. "Excuse me, I am going to see if I can grab a drink and a little nibble." he said, not waiting a moment to give them the chance at telling him goodbye before he walked away from them, practically in a hurry and he knew that he had to get across the dance floor before the next song started to play....
He would be damned if he didn't.
