I covered myself just in time to know for sure, Chief Webber hadn't seen me. It was a close one though. Apparently, the comforter was fluffy enough to where, he didnt even recognize that there was a woman in Derek's bed.
"Hey, Richard. Is something wrong?" Derek asked. Chief Webber clicked his tongue and breathed out like Derek was ridiculous for suggesting something so silly.
"Augh, no! Just, thought you might have some questions pertaining to a certain ex-wife? I heard you were looking for me from some of the residents." I heard the benches around his table creak as they both sat down. This was gonna be a while. Derek grabbed a couple beers from his fridge and passed one to Richard. I was gonna be here for a while.
"Yeah I do, actually. You called her?" Derek asked with an offended tone.
"Well, yes I did. We have a quintuplets case she is working on right now and if she agrees to it, I'm willing to offer her a one year contract with us."
"Why. Why would you do that. Richard, come on, you are one of my best friends here, you know what she did to me, and you also know I have a new girlfriend that works in the hospital. Addison is being a terrorist. She did this on purpose. Dont you thin-" Derek started a rant and Richard shut him down.
"Don't you think I took all that into consideration?! Come on Derek. You KNOW she is the best OB in the country. People come from around the world to see her. Do you know how many patients she'll bring in? This is not personal." Richard said with a harsh tone.
"Well, you made it personal. So yeah, it is personal. Because now both me and my girlfriend have to work in a hostile work environment."
"No, Derek. I'm running a business here. And I made a sane business decision. Anyone in my position would have done the same thing. By the way, who is your girlfriend?" He asked, changing the subject.
No, Derek. Dont get distracted. Fight for her to be fired, PLEASE. I thought to myself.
"Well, I can't really tell you that. I dont want any repercussions for her. She's an intern. But don't think I'm just using her for sex Richard. She's falling in love with me and I'm falling just as hard for her. I can see a future with her already and it's only been almost a week. So please, don't ask." Derek said. He sounded sad that he couldn't brag about me to his friends. But I couldn't risk being taken off his service entirely. I wanted to be a neurosurgeon. I need to be on his service. Richard clicked his tongue again.
"I believe you. You wear your emotions right on your face. Just talking about her your eyes light up. But Derek, you know it's not against the rules to date an intern. I legally can't do anything about it. But you do have to give the others a fair chance to learn neuro. But if you really are falling in love with this one, then I respect that, and it won't have any repercussions." Richard said.
"I really am falling in love with her, but I'd have to ask her." He said, emphasizing those last words. He was asking me without actually asking me. I pulled the blanket off my head, held it to my chest and sat up.
"Uh, Hi Dr. Webber."
"AHHHHHHH!!!!!" He screamed loudly as I spoke.
"Oh My God, are you trying to give me a heart atta- Wynter?" He asked. I nodded. He turned around.
"Put some clothes on." He said covering his face. Derek hand a hand over his mouth to keep his smile hidden, surprisingly he was doing a good job at hiding his laughter.
"Sorry Chief. I'm decent now." I said. He shook his hand as he turned around.
"No, I'm sorry I didn't even realize you were here. And sorry to Derek as well. I shouldn't just walk into people's houses." He said.
"So you two are a thing, huh? That's great. That's really great." He said. I sat down next to Derek after grabbing a beer for myself. It was awkward for a while.
"So Wynter, how is your mom doing?" Richard asked. I shrugged.
"She's fine, She is having fun writing her book on top of the Eiffel Tower. She said the view is beautiful, but the men are better." I laughed and Derek chuckled, slightly confused. Richard went on a soliloquy about how beautiful France is and I whispered to Derek.
"I'll tell you later." He nodded. And listened to the end of Richard's speech.
"Yeah, that sounds amazing, Richard but we really should be getting to bed. This one has to be at work in about 6 hours and I have to be there in 8. You have to be there in 7 so we all should get to bed." Derek said. Richard nodded.
"Yeah I suppose you're right. I'll see you two later. Just remember what I said about favoritism." Richard said. I tilted my head.
"Hey, Doctor Webber?" Richard turned around in the door way.
""Hmm?" He mumbled. I sighed and decided to just ask.
"Neuro is my specialty. I know it, Derek knows it, even Bailey has recognized my natural talent, on top of my knowledge of the Neuro Network. I would like to be on Derek's service more than the others, because I feel that would be more beneficial to my education. I will definitely still take the time to learn the other specialties, but I would prefer to spend most of my time in Neuro." I said. Derek looked at me like I was crazy, then he looked at Richard and also looked at him like he was crazy because Webber was actually considering it.
"How about this. If you can get through a solo surgery in every other specialty, I'll let you spend the rest of your intern year as a Neuro Intern. Sound like a plan? We can start tomorrow. My specialty is General. There is 8 specialties, but you don't have to do a Neuro solo, so we have the next 7 days together. You'll follow me around, and I'll observe all of your surgeries. Good luck, get some sleep." He said. Solo surgeries?! In my first week?! I may have fucked myself over. Alot.
"Oh my God, babe! That's awesome!" He said, jumping up from the table and hugging me from behind. I didn't share in his enthusiasm.
"No Derek. It's not. I haven't spent any time on specialties other than yours and freaking Addison's! I have to study all night now, and I dont even know which procedure I'll be performing!" I said. Derek turned me around to face him.
"Don't worry about that. You know where all the veins and arteries are. You know how to perform basic tumour resections, bowel patches. And appendectomies. And you can practice a Wipple in the skills lab for an hour. Other than those. General is all about laprascopics. You know how to do those. You'll be fine. Richard will tell you what specialty you'll get next is, which, knowing Richard, will probably be Cardio. And Cardio is easy. It's all valve replacements or repairs and transplants, which you know how to do. Then ortho, which is a bunch of idiots, breaking bones and putting the puzzle pieces back together. You'll be able to get that no problem. Then, he'll probably have you do a c-section in Gynecology. Which you might struggle with, just because of Addison, but other than that, those are easy then a Peds case, which has alot to do with Neuro and cardio because alot of babies are born with heart or brain defects. Then Last, trauma which might be hard because you never know what you're going to get, but babe. You have nothing to worry about. I have seen you work in the OR. You are incredible. Seriously. Do some research, get to work early, and ace the stupid test Webber gave you and it's just you and me for the rest of the year." I relaxed my shoulders, grabbed a notebook and a pen and crawled into bed, sitting with my legs folded. Derek climbed in after me resting his head in my lap and falling asleep there.
Tomorrow was going to be hell.
