Alternative Ending to Fahrenheit 451

The new world born from destruction, flipped upside down, stared on at the men here with montag and himself. Everything that once meant something had been destroyed, leaving a blank slate. A fresh start. A new birth, and room to grow. Montag glanced over at the others hoping to find that they were not too distraught with the outcome. Their faces bore the expression of one who had just witnessed the execution of a mass murderer. The sight was gruesome, to see the bomb swallow and spit out everything Montag had known. It's too bad that montag wasn't all that attached to the way things were run, anyhow. The men beside him seemed to have the same thoughts by their looks, and Granger's words that followed, "Well, we can only go up from here."
Montag turned to see Granger looking at the spot the city used to sit. "The society that had built up was corrupt. That society held everyone to one way of life. One very planned and very strict way of life. It never allowed for people like us, who thought for ourselves. That was never really our society." His words dripped with spite. Spite directed toward the society that looked down on thinkers, such as themselves. The society that now was falling apart. The city that was swallowed.
Montag gave a longing glance at the spot as well, "But it shouldn't have had to have been their society either." Without even looking at Granger, Montag sensed his gaze. He had to have known where Montag's head was at. He must have seen his thoughts dwelling on the others like them... but there was something Montag knew Granger couldn't see... He couldn't see the white dress and pale painted face. Granger couldn't see the basket of walnuts at Montag's doorstep. Granger couldn't see Mildred saying that had all been swept away in one fatal smash. He couldn't see those pictures running through his head in the form of one swift flashback, gone as quick as it had come. She is gone, she has been gone, she can't come back... maybe one day I can see her... up there. Montag found his hand reaching up and tracing the Atlantic blue sky above. Maybe one day, Clairesse will come down and pull him up there with her.
"No." Montag's thoughts became audible. "I have a duty down here. Everyone leaves this earth one day, but my day isn't today."
His fists clenched, Montag shot his head Granger's direction with an intensity that Granger hasn't seen before now. "Granger." Montag took a couple steps in Granger's direction.
"Do you trust my judgement?" Confused by the question, Granger replied, "Why yes, Montag, I do."
Montag stopped to choose his next words carefully. He knew that saying something out of line now could be fatal.
