*Flashback*

"Dominic, please don't. I- uh- here, I have another beer for you and um... dinner! Dinner will be ready soon,"

I stutter anxiously.

"Shut up Aria. I know what you're doing, and it won't work. You stupid little girl,"

Dominic curses and throws another fist, this one hitting my left side. I fall to the ground, unsteady. My head spins, and I feel weaker and weaker in each passing second.

"I'm going to the bar. Stay here, you hear me? I'll be back... whenever,"

He says angrily. I nod and find a tiny bit of strength- enough to pick me up off the ground and get to my feet. He puts on his boots and slams the door of our tiny London apartment shut.

I walk into the bathroom and close the door behind me. The full length mirror reflects me; a nineteen year old with bruises in various places and tired eyes.

I can't live like this.

I think.

Not anymore.

*Now: October 20th, 2014*

The streets of New York are buzzing with activity; adults in suits just getting out of work, parents leaving the grocery store, little kids holding onto their mothers hand and trying not to get lost.

I make my way to the bus stop. My hands are cold and clammy, but the bus still isn't here. I wait for ten more minutes and it finally pulls up to the curb in front of me.

After handing the bus driver my $3, I find a seat in the back. My hair is tied in a messy braid off to the side, and the black t-shirt I wear under a thin jacket isn't doing much to keep me warm.

When the bus starts up, I take out my phone and check to see if I have any texts or missed calls. A call, from my mother. That's surprising, seeing how she hadn't talked to me in months...

I dial her number and wait for her to pick up.

"Hello Aria, how are you?"

She greets.

"I'm... I'm okay. How come you haven't answered my calls since July?"

I ask, a bit angry.

"Oh right... sorry sweetie. Anyways, I have to ask you a favor. Do you know-"

"Really mom? No, you can not ask me a favor. I call you at least twice a week for months on end and you don't respond. When you finally do call back, it's only because you need something. It's not fair,"

I hang up, mad at her. Mad at how she neglected to care even when she knew about the Dominic situation.

I realize that I'm close to my apartment building, so I reach above me and pull the yellow string, signaling the bus driver to pull over.

I walk to the front and step off, then walk into my apartment building. It's not the nicest place ever, but it works. I live by myself now. I left Dominic three months ago. He's tried to contact me several times, but I've ignored his texts and calls, knowing he'll never be a part of my life again.

I walk down the hall to my space and unlock the door. I realize that it's almost 7 o'clock and I haven't had anything to eat. I open the cabinets and fridge and see nothing appealing, so I decide to go to the cheap little coffee shop next door.

-

"The usual?"

The barista asks when I approach the counter. I smile and nod. She makes my coffee quickly and hands me a large slice of cranberry bread from the display case.

"Thank you,"

I tell her, paying for my small meal. She nods and I go to my seat in the corner. There's another boy here, about my age, sitting in the booth next to me.

"Hello, beautiful,"

I hear him say. I look up, not sure who he was talking to since there's no one else here.

"Are you... talking to me?"

I ask. He chuckles.

"Well you're the only beautiful girl in here,"

He responds. My face heats up a little bit.

"I'm Niall... Horan,"

He introduces himself.

"I'm Aria Evans,"

-

That night, I think about Niall for quite a bit. Normally boys aren't really something that I want to spend time with, based on my past. But there's something about Niall. Maybe it's his Irish accent, or maybe it's his blue eyes. But I know there's something.

After we met, he came to my table and we had a long conversation made up of small talk and getting to know each other.

-

I guess I finally fell asleep, because the next thing I know it's the morning and I have to be at work. I hop in the shower and rinse off, washing my hair quickly.

I get dressed in black jeans and a black long sleeve shirt. Slipping on my old grey sneakers, I scarf down a bowl of cereal for breakfast and quickly head off.

It's raining peacefully, but the city is the opposite of peaceful right now. People are rushing all around, their heels clicking on the wet sidewalks. Suddenly someone bumps into me.

"Niall, hey,"

I greet him. I'm not surprised I bumped into him; he lives on the other side of the coffee shop, which means we're basically neighbors.

"Hi! I was hoping I'd run into you. I forgot to ask for your number last night..."

He says. I tell him the digits in my phone number and then say goodbye and continue on my way to the restaurant I work at.
