They say true love can come at first sight. That moment when you see someone and you know they're the one. In just one glance, two people can be hooked, with butterflies in their stomachs and everything.
I'd probably be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of those people. I can honestly say no one has ever made me feel something special at first glance; or really second glance for that matter.
My life has been filled with one failed relationship after another. I just can't seem to find that one person who will give me butterflies when I see them.
🔢 present day
"Wow, you look so gorgeous Ava!" My roommate Cara gasped as I walked into the living room we shared.
"Do you really think so?" I asked. I looked at my reflection in the window and nervously smoothed out the wrinkles in my cute little black dress that I only wore on special occasions.
"Of course! Zac would be an idiot not to ask you to marry him with you wearing this."
I laughed. "Come on, Cara, we don't know for sure he's proposing tonight."
Cara rolled her eyes. "Please, it's been what? Two years now? I'm pretty sure it's time."
I tried to disagree with her, but I thought she was right too. Zac and I have been dating for the last two years. And lately he'd been acting a little nervous around me, like he wanted to tell me something.
I was scared and excited all together.
A knock came at the door.
"Ooh! I'll get it!" Cara ran excitedly to the door.
I looked at myself once more and smiled. Tonight could possibly be the start of a new chapter.
"It's for you!" Cara called. I walked to the door quickly. Cara was already backing away from the door when I reached it.
"Hi!" I smiled at Zac.
He looked down at me. His expression looked a little torn, but I didn't think much of it. "Hey! You look beautiful tonight."
"Thank you." I said. "Shall we go?"
Zac hesitated for a moment before nodding his head. "We shall."
I followed him out of the apartment building and into the cab waiting outside. We rode in silence to the restaurant. I could tell he was nervous for something, and I couldn't help but be excited.
The waiter at a fancy restaurant brought us to a private table in the back and everything seemed to be falling into place.
"This place is beautiful." I noted.
Zac nodded his head. "Yes, the decorator did a good job."
"Yes." I agreed.
We sat I silence for about a minute.
"Um, Ava, I have to tell you something." Zac cleared his throat. I had never seen him look so nervous before.
This must be it. He was going to propose. I just knew it.
"Yes?" I asked. My heart was skipping beats.
He made eye contact with me. "I think we need to break up."
My heart almost exploded. "What?" I asked. I hoped I hadn't heard him right.
"Well, your an amazing girl, but I just don't really feel it anymore. You know what I mean?" He asked. His eyes were sympathetic.
"No. I don't know what you mean." I said harshly.
I didn't understand. We had spent two great years together and now he just wants to break up. How could he not feel it anymore?
