TWO
Grant
"Throughout the day, I watched as the Brewer family worked. Mainly watching Natalia. Nothing much though, she just worked all day. Then I saw Thatcher hit her and she took it as if it was normal." I report to my boss, Atticus.
"He hit her?" He questions. I nod my head, and the boss taps his chin. "Hmm. Are you already moved into the house?" I nod again. I don't talk much. Only for reports actually. Just then the phone rings. I see Thatcher's name on the caller ID.
Boss picks up the phone. "Thatcher! Hello." He greets. "Do you have my thirty thousand for Grant?" He asks. "Hmm, good."
I am a very expensive piece of equipment. I am sold around as a bodyguard of people. I am the best of the best if I do say so myself. I just don't speak nor take off my mask. I'm very private, and only worry about my work. And that's how it will always be. I am loyal to my boss, doing whatever he says.
"I will send him tomorrow at ten o'clock sharp." Boss says before hanging up. "Now, you know your job there, correct?" I nod my head. "Perfect. You are free to go for the night." He dismisses me.
I walk out of my boss's office, and go to my room. I stay in the warehouse when I'm not on a mission. Which is rare, I maybe get a week every two months here. I am really good at my job, so my boss sells me to places to get extra business. I go and fight for people, protect them if needed. I am just a warrior, nothing more. Not even human to some people. But it's been like this for my entire life, the only reason I was born was for this. To be the best of the best.
I get into my room and right into the shower. As the water pours over my scalp and down my spine I feel my body relax for the first time in a very long time. It's been a long three months; Taking down people for boss, spying on Thatcher, sneaking around for information. But this may be one of my biggest, most important missions yet. Boss is counting on me for this to succeed.
Once my shower is finished I go right to bed to prepare for a big day tomorrow.
- Next morning, 9:59 am -
Another thing about me is that I don't knock. So I wait the extra ten seconds or so before I walk into the Brewer mansion. When I step through the door, Thatcher, and a few guys on either side of him are waiting for me. Thatcher greats me, and offers his hand to shake, but I don't take it and just nod.
"Welcome Grant. I thank you for protecting my daughter." He says with a shaky voice. I nod my head again. He responded by lifting his eyebrows. "Speaking of my daughter-" He goes to walk toward the grand staircase to call for Natalia, but she comes down and he shoots her a look.
She is wearing jeans with a simple grey t-shirt. Her hair is down and has a light wave to it. Not going to lie, she is pretty. Once she reaches the bottom of the staircase she is hustled over to stand with her father near me.
"This is Natalia, my daughter who you will be watching over." He states. "She is a student, but do not, I repeat, do not let her go to school. She can do online but not in-person-"
"Dad-" Natalia starts but she is shot a threatening glare.
"Keep her in the house as much as possible, and keep her safe. I am trusting you with her life." He says.
I nod.
"Natalia, like I explained, Grant doesn't speak, nor take off his mask. Do as he says." He explains to his daughter.
"Okay." She seems slightly intimidated by me, not looking me in the eyes.
"I wish you a good car ride." Thatcher hugs Natalia, giving her a kiss on her forehead. "I love you, Natalia."
"Love you too dad." She says slinging a backpack over her shoulders. She waves to the people before following me outside.
I open the back door for her and she thanks me before getting in. Once she does I shut the door and get into the driver's seat and pull out onto the main road. I look back at Natalia the mirror to see her slide her glasses down and begins to read. The car ride is brisk. Toward the end I can tell she is getting antsy.
"Hey, I know you don't talk, but can you just nod your head if we are close?" She speaks up. "I just have to go to the bathroom." I nod my head since we are about five minutes from the location. "Thank goodness." She sighs.
- 12:44 pm -
I pull into the garage of the home. I see Natalia's eyes look around at the home and surroundings. It's a house set back into the woods a little bit. And a decent size at that. As soon as I park the car she gets out and searches for the bathroom. I follow her and grab her bags, placing them into her bedroom.
I stand near the staircase with my hands behind my back, staring forward. Natalia gets out of the bathroom and jumps a little bit when she nearly bumps into me. "Where did you come from?" She exclaims. She waits for a second. "Right, you don't talk. Sorry. I keep forgetting that."
She walks away and looks around the up stairs a little bit. "Um. Which is my room? And yours?" She asks, slowly turning around to face me. I walk to her room and open the door. "Mine, okay." Then I walk toward the staircase and point at my door. "And yours, okay. I was just curious. I don't want to intrude in anything." She says.
She looks me up and down for a little while. When our eyes meet again her eyes dart away.
