Xavier's POV
Hearing her call me "daddy" last night had caused my heart to skip a beat. I was not at all expecting that. She had made it very clear to me a few days ago that I was not her father and never would be. For the whole night I held her in my arms to make her feel safe. She needed me... and at the same time I needed her.
Right now I was working in my office with Anna in my lap while Isabelle was still fast asleep in her room. On any other day, I would have woken her up but I knew the events from yesterday had exhausted her both mentally and physically. I was glad to spend time with Anna though even if it was her just sitting in my lap while I worked.
At about eleven, one of my guards had called me saying that Isabelle was up looking for me. After bringing Anna to my mother, I raced up the stairs towards my little girl with a breakfast in hand. My mother had made everyone pancakes with fruit for breakfast.
As I neared her room, I heard crying. I quickly entered her room to see her sitting up on her bed with her little fists rubbing her eyes while she sobbed. Before running over to her, I placed her food on her little desk. I then scooped her up in my arms and rocked her back and forth. At first she was resistant but once she realized it was me, she quickly calmed down. Her crying ceased and a big smile broke out on her face.
"Good morning, my sweet Isabelle," I said, giving her forehead a small peck. "What has gotten you all worked up?" I questioned. I had a pretty good guess but I wanted her to feel comfortable talking to me about her feelings.
Her smile dropped and she said, "you weren't there when I w-woke up," she frowned.
I rubbed away the last few tears on her cheeks as I said, "I was right downstairs, princess. Would you like me to wake you up next time before I leave?" I asked and she nodded in response very quickly. "Alright, I will do that then."
I passed her breakfast and while she ate, I filled the tub up to give her a bath. I even made sure to put a lot of bubbles in because I knew how much she loved them. Having a bath wasn't her favourite but it made it better for her if there were bubbles. Once she was done eating, I carried her into the bathroom.
After undressing her, I put her in the tub. Her whole body wriggled in excitement for the bubbles. I then placed a few toys in there with her to preoccupy her while I shampooed her hair and washed her with a washing cloth. She was only in there for fifteen minutes but it was enough time to sufficiently clean her.
I placed her on her bed in a big fluffy towel while I went into her drawers to find a cute dress and shoes to go with it. It took a few minutes to get her dressed because of how wiggly she was but I had managed to do it.
Today I decided it was the day I would ask her questions about her mother and father. She had been so reluctant before but she had clearly grown to trust me more. I hoisted her up onto my hip as I walked to my office which is where I wanted to have the conversation. I decided to not have it in her room because I wanted her to know that her room was her safe place. It's not like she wouldn't be safe in my office but she might feel uncomfortable talking about the subject. Her room was her own space where she should feel comfortable.
Isabelle's POV
X had carried me to his office once I was dressed. I didn't want to go to his office. I wanted to go play outside. He sat me down on her big couch and sat across me in his big office chair. I felt so out of place with everything being so much bigger than me. X reached out to hold my hands to try and gain my attention as I stared at things around his office.
"Isabelle," he said, making me look into his eyes. I didn't like the look on his face. He looked concerned and worried about something. When mama had this look on her face, it usually meant that we were in danger. "There are a few things I would like to ask you and if you feel comfortable, I would like you to give me some answers," he started, almost reluctant. I nodded my head slowly, not sure why he was so worried to ask me questions. "Why were you by yourself the day I found you in the forest?" He asked, making my entire body tense up.
The last time he had asked me about my parents I hadn't answered, he had gotten very angry. I was scared that he was going to hurt me if I didn't give him answers but no words left my mouth. I felt frozen and numb. X reached out to stroke my cheek. "Please. You can trust me. I only want to help you," he practically begged.
I thought for a second and nodded my head. "My m-mommy were taken away by bad wolves. S-she told me to run a-away," I sniffled. "The bad wolves had been chasing us but I don't know w-what we did wrong," I said, my eyes becoming blurry from tears. X sighed and continued to stroke my cheek in hopes of comforting me.
"I'm so sorry that you had to go through that, princess. But I promise that no harm will come to you here," he said sounding sincere. I wasn't sure if I believed him. My mommy had said the same thing and she got taken away. "What about your father?" He asked.
I shrugged my shoulder and decided I was done talking. He had asked me a few more questions but I had kept my mouth shut. He got the message and decided not to push me any further. He scooped me up in his arms and brought me downstairs where Anna was playing with her new cat.
"How about you go play with Anna while I get you two a snack, hm?" He said. I nodded my head and raced over to her.
"What are you doing here?" she said meanly. I could feel my face heat up, not sure how to respond.
"Do you want to play house?" I asked, changing the topic. She looked up at me and glared.
"What do you think, rogue?" She said almost as if I were the grossest thing in the world. I nodded and decided not to engage with her. Instead, I reached out to pet Fluffy. As soon as my head touched Fluffy's head, she screamed in outrage. "Don't touch her! She's mine." She grabbed Fluffy from my reach possessively. Tears sprung to my eyes. I wasn't sure why she disliked me so much.
"Anna!" I heard her mother yell. "We do not speak to each other like that," she scolded. Anna turned to me and glared before she ran off with Fluffy dangling in her arms. Her mother came over to me and smiled.
"How are you doing, dear?" she said with a warm smile. I shrugged my shoulder. I didn't like talking to strangers especially when X was in another room. "I'm sorry for the way Anna spoke to you. Don't worry, she'll warm up to you she just doesn't like change," her mom explained. I really doubted that Anna would ever like me. I wasn't sure why she hated me so much but she did.
I saw X enter the room. My heart fluttered in relief as I ran over to him. I wrapped my arms around his thigh, seeking some security. He always made me feel safe. His hand reached out to stroke the top of my head. "Is everything okay, mom? What was with Anna's outburst?" He questioned, concern laced in his tone.
"I think Anna is still getting used to the idea of having Isabelle around. Don't worry, I set her straight when she raised her tone at Isabelle," she assured him. X looked down at me and scooped me up in his arms.
"How about we head outside, huh? Get some fresh air," X asked. I nodded my head in excitement.
