ROMAN
I am stuck with the fucker next to me.
Still in the hospital, I can't sleep. She deprives me all of my sleep. Because she is all I can think about.
I saved her on her wedding night. I protected her. I lied to my capo for her. I was ready to help her get a new life. I risked everything for her.
And she showed me her gratitude for my generosity by breaking her promise to me — running back to her daddy at the first opportunity. She reported me to the police, while I was fighting my brother to stop him from following her.
Now I am in police custody. And in less than a week, I will be in jail. I huff. I should have just killed her that night, but goddam me I spared her.
I come back from my thoughts as the door opens and Donatello walks in. I smile as I see him wearing a doctor's uniform like Marco last time.
"Dr. Alessi? What's my daily dosage of medicine for today? Poison?" I ask, scowling at him.
"No wonder you are still awake," he mutters, looking at a snoring Valerio's before looking back at me.
"I am not here because I want to kill you. I can't kill you even if I want to kill you."
"What the are you talking about?" I ask him with a frown. He confuses me. He sighs before pulling out a chair and sitting in front of me.
"What kind of files did you have in your safe at home, Roman?" he asks me, looking at me seriously.
"Just some contracts about sealed deals, that I had to take care of in two months, why?" I asks him curiously.
"Fuck," he groans, looking irritated. "How did she get the code to your safe?"
"I gave her the code so that she could get some money and ran away as Valerio came to kill her," I mumble with a frown. "What's the matter?"
"Well, Rita obviously found the files more interesting than the money. She took the files instead of the money. Now she threatens Antonio to hand over the files to the police," he tells me frustrated.
"What does she want in return for the files?" I asks him with a frown and sit up straighten in bed.
"She wants you both to be safe. We even have to protect you. Do you know how hard it is for my brother to protect the men who betrayed him?"
"I did not betray him, I killed his enemy, I killed Nicolai, but she is not his enemy. She means no harm to him," I groan annoyed — fed up with getting called a betrayer."
"She is just a victim in this power game. She only wants to live a peaceful life. If he didn't send Valerio and let me take care of her, she'd be a ghost now!"
"Innocent?" he huffs. "This woman is dangerous, Roman! Don't you see it? She used you to get free!"
"Maybe that was her only option after your brother surrounded my apartment with his armed men." I still defend her. Part of me wants not to believe that she is a greedy bitch, only caring for herself.
"She used her father to help her put Maria on trial to get her dead husband's shares. After her father helped her and she had no use for him," he tells me with his lips pursed.
"Therefore, she killed him and she also got his company shares. Now tell me, was that also her only option?"
"What?" The news are surprising, not sounding like the woman I get to know over the past weeks.
"This bitch inherited shares of multimillion-dollar companies in less than two weeks, making her a great opponent to us. Now she's threatening Antonio because of you two. She is obviously not done with you yet."
