Hiccup wandered through the forest one morning, careful to not stray to far from his house. He knew his father and Gobber would be worried if he was in the forest alone, since he was, well, a runt. A hiccup. He jumped slightly when a rustling sound came from a bush, and an adorable little cat slipped out, looking afraid. Hiccup pulled a strip of meat from his belt and offered it to the cat. It sniffed his hand, then caught it gently in his toothless mouth. "Aw." He cooed, kneeling down to stroke the cat's back. It was smooth and scaly, but he'd only seen cats in pictures, so he figured this was how the felt. The cat tore at the food, holding it between his tiny front paws, purring as the little boy petted him. Once it finished the meat, it climbed into his lap and curled up, just slightly larger than Hiccup and much heavier. "I'm going to name you Toothless." Hiccup decided. He found something soft on his cat's side, like a fold of skin, and extended it. It was a small wing. Which meant...that his new cat friend was really his new dragon friend. But for some reason, he wasn't afraid. He'd heard stories that a dragon would kill him first sight, or carry him away, but here he was with a dragon in his lap, purring as it slept, and it had not attacked or carried him away. "We need to get you away from here. Daddy would kill you if he saw you with me, Toothless." He picked up the sleeping dragon, carrying it deeper into the forest with much strain. They came across a deep crevace buried in a hillside, Hiccup walked inside. It was the enterance to a large cavern with tunnels in the back, he set Toothless down, who woke up and started sniffing everything, fluttering his tiny wings and lashing his tail. They played together in the caverns, chasing each other around, until it started to get dark. "Stay here, Toothless. I'll be back tomorrow." The dragon burbled, nuzzling his hand, then spat fire on the ground, turning in a circle and curled up on the circle of heat. Hiccup ran back to his house to find his angry father waiting. "Where were you?" Stoick the Vast bellowed, "You know you're not allowed out without Gobber and me!" "I was playing in the woods, Dad. I stayed near the house." He lied. His father frowned. "Just stay near the house next time." Gobber agreed, "Don't want you to meet a dragon, lad." "Already have." "Okay." Hiccup ran to the Great Hall to get some dinner, sitting with a group of kids his age. They all scooted away from him, giggling. He was smaller then them all, the only people in the group that didn't tease him was Fishlegs, a nerd, and Astrid, who was a warrior. Both ignored him, while Snotlout and the Twins teased him relentlessly. Hiccup ate his dinner silently, tolerating the jeers and remarks with thoughts of his dragon. He trekked off to bed, thinking that if his father found out, he'd be banished from Berk and Toothless killed. He wasn't going to let that happen. He knew dragons were nice creatures, probably they raided because they needed food. Maybe others thought like him. Hiccup also knew that reaching out to other adults would be impossible, they were too caught up in their ways. His only hope for not killing dragons would be the children of Berk. Including the other seven year olds. He just hoped that he could pull this off, without getting himself hurt in the process.
