9:00pm January 2010
Horns blared. Curses littered the atmosphere. Confused anger was everyone's delight. Once the clock struck twelve, everyone stopped. A car in sudden ashes restricted movement.
"What's going on?", "how did that happen?", "someone call 911!", "call the fire fighters!" questions, requests were tossed in the air but no one took notice of them. It seemed like time, just like the others, was at a standstill.
Due to quick action, the fire was soon put off but the damage was already done. A couple laid side by side, till death did them apart. A couple with kids who would expect a goodnight kiss once again. It's quite sad....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Police station, two weeks later
Amy sighed and walked into the busy police station. The moment she walked in large noises assaulted her hearing. A large group of people were gathered at the front desk arguing with the officers. A man badly wounded cowered behind the officers as people kept launching at him.
"It seems like he stole something again" Amy thought as she stood at a safe distance to watch the drama unfolding.
"Hear wetin I dey talk oga police. Dis one no be the first time wey this guy go do dis kind thing and every time e happen una go say u go handle am yet you no go do anything. This time abeg make we settle am by ourselves. By the time we don deal with am eh, e no go dey steal person sweat". A bulky man that looked rather pregnant said. With beads of sweat dripping down his face and a shirt that clung to his torso, he seemed like the ringleader.
These days, it is not uncommon to see people justifying their reasons for jungle justice. The frustration of having to work like an elephant and eat like an ant drives most people to beat up anyone who steal the nothing that they have. They even participate in beating up any one that is labelled a thief without asking for information.
Seeing that the argument had no intention of stopping anytime soon, Amy swiftly made her way to the front desk shoving those standing in her way and ignoring insults hurled her way. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally got to the desk.
Two weeks after the death of her parents in a mysterious car explosion, she had received news from the police station near the scene of the incident that the explosion was due to negligence. Not wanting to believe such report, she reported the case to the police station where she lived and finally after much reluctance, the DPO himself was willing to listen to what she had to say.
"How can we help you young lady?" a lady probably in her late twenties asked her with a smile. It seemed like she took lessons on how to approach people.
"She should work in customer care instead of a noisy place like this" Amy thought with a smile, she wasn't nervous anymore.
"I want to see the DPO. I have an appointment."
"Ah, I see. What's your name?"She made her repeat the question since the noise was getting louder. Soon she found herself knocking on a dilapidated wooden door. A gruff voice ushered her into the room. Expecting some middle aged, potbellied, tribal marked man, Amy was shocked when she saw a man who seemed to be in his early to mid twenties.
"Do they graduate this early?I wonder what a man as handsome and well built as he, is doing in this crumbling office. He could totally be my next crush" Amy thought. Nevertheless since he seemed like an honest, diligent person so she felt hopeful that he would help her. Ooh how quickly it crumbled under his angry gaze.
"Young lady", he began, "do you know why I called you? For the past month, I've been getting the same mail multiplying by regular proportion each day. I knew that if I didn't rectify this situation, it would grow bigger and messier and quite frankly, I love this job, it settles my bills. Now, when you are given the findings of an investigation that shouldn't have been carried out in the first place you are supposed to let it die. Accidents happen okay? Get a grip with reality and stop going around asking stupid questions. If someone really did this as you think, then trying to find out what really happened could get you killed and you've got a sibling to take care of. The only way I can help you is to stand as your guardian till you are old enough. I've been in an orphanage before and I can guarantee it is a nightmare." His eyes glistened with so much sincerity that she couldn't even bring herself to object. Dejectedly, she walked out. It seems like this would be the end of uncovering the mystery behind her parent's death... for now.
