A day had gone by from Beverly giving her number to Rachel and well Rachel was still happy as ever, until nine a.m. Rachel's mother was in the kitchen, her father was still passed out on the couch.
Morning Mom! Rachel muttered not wanting to wake her father. Morning Rachel. The monotone voice of her mother responded not making eye contact. Rachel could sense both her mother and father wanted her out of the house.
After a (semi) nutritious meal ( it was chocolate chip pancakes from a diner), Rachel headed to the Derry Public Library. From what she could see the place was pretty much deserted. Eyes scanning the shelves Rachel found the book she had read time and time again.
The Chronicles of Narnia. If Rachel could find Narnia she would go for two reasons, 1: to start over, 2: she could stay in the closet for a very long time. As Rachel looked for a place to sit she saw a depressing sight. A kid about her age, on the chubby side, with short blonde hair, and a grey tee shirt.
Rachel had never seen him before maybe she could try to make one more friend over the summer. Hi, is this seat taken. The kid looked up from what he was appeared to be writing. No, it's free. He said with a smile on his face.
Rachel smiled back at him. Rachel Thompson. Holding out her hand. Ben Hascom. Ben shook her hand. Narnia? Ben asked looking at her book. Yeah, have you read it? No, not really my genre of book. That's cool, whatcha writing? Nothing. Well it looks like a post card and the poems cute. Ben looked down his arm that had been covering the post card had moved. A hi ho silver away, could be heard from Bill. Rachel looked at them longingly.
It was mid October of the fourth grade when it happened. Rachel, Eddie, Richie, Stan and Bill had been sitting at their lunch table eating shitty sandwiches. E-e-everyone h-here l-l-likes s-someone r-right? Bill had asked. Rachel had dreaded this question for a while now. N-no. Rachel quickly blurted out. Impossible. Muttered Stan.
Come on Rachel, you have to like someone. Eddie said. Fine, yes. Who do tell. Richie said leaning in curious. It'sBeverlyMarsh. W-who? Rachel. Bill and the rest of the losers leaned in. It's Beverly Marsh. Rachel mumbled. HOLY SHIT RACHEL'S FUCKING GAY! Richie shouted at the top of his lungs. Rachel looked at him wide eyed, the losers looking at her in shock, the class looking at her in disgust, and Richie regretting what he just did.
One by one the losers stopped talking to her. First it was Bill he just ignored her making it clear that he didn't want her there. It was Stan next, began to stay far away from her like she was the plague. Then Eddie who stayed with the group giving Rachel apologetic looks whenever he had the chance. Finally Rachel was pissed at Richie and pushed him away. Once Rachel calmed down the rumours spread, and the worst part was Rachel was alone not even her closest friends could stand her and the rest was history.
Slam. A large book landed on the table bringing Rachel into the present. Found it. The librarian says looking at Ben. Isn't it summer vacation? I thought you two would be ready to take a break from the books? Nah I like it here. Never, fictional people are better than real ones.
Children should be spending their summer outside with friends, don't you two have any friends. The librarian says staring at Rachel, who was feeling attacked.
Can I have the book now? Ben says annoyance in his voice. The librarian sighs and walks away. Well I gotta go maybe we can talk some other time. Rachel says getting up from her seat.
Sure, well you know where I'll be the rest of the summer. Rachel laughs at this. Well I'll have to come visit then. As she walks to her house she passes by the neilbolt house. Rachel never liked that house it always made her uneasy. Thud. Rachel found her self in a ditch but it didn't look like one. The dirt was to symmetrical to be a ditch it was like I'm in oh no. Oh no, oh no, no, no. Dirt from bellow her began to sink taking her with it. Rachel tried to claw for the surface. It was no use Rachel could barely grab hold of anything except handfuls of grass.
