By the time I made it back to the school's gym, the boys were now onto the final set of the game-- having Seijoh winning the first and the opposing team taking the second. I entered the gym balcony and immediately moved so that I was nowhere near my ex-friend, who I had just confronted, and just continued to absentmindedly watch our volleyball team play.
Over twenty-five minutes passed until the final points were scored and the game finally ended. Our school ended up winning, though it didn't seem like our team was as happy with their gameplay as they usually were. Seems like the boys were having an off-day (especially the third years).
I saw Sakurai and her friends start giggling and head down the stairs to, I assume, go meet up with the handsome setter everyone gawks over. It was at this point that Iwaizumi looked up and made eye contact with me-- he must have been shocked to see my defeated look and quickly excused himself from the court in order to come up and talk with me.
"Whoa what happened? Are you okay?" He softly, yet sternly, asked me.
"Well, she confessed to everything," I pulled my broken phone out of my pocket, "but she smashed my phone so there wasn't any proof"
It was now that I had angry and frustrated tears streaming down my face. What were we supposed to do now?
Before I could think of anything else, Iwa beat me to it. "But you still have my phone right?"
I was a bit taken aback, but then again it made sense that he just wanted to make sure his device wasn't broken as well. I pulled it out of my other pocket and handed it to him. "Yeah, of course"
"(Y/n), Sakurai confessed everything to you after she knew you didn't have any evidence right? Like she told you everything?"
"Yes..?"
He smiled, unlocked his phone, and turned it so that I could see what was on his screen. My eyes widened to double their normal size when I saw that his phone had in fact been recording the entire time. He took my silence as a sign to continue his demonstration. He stopped the current recording and quickly went through all the voices and then played me a small clip.
"--Oikawa Tōru is my boyfriend now, and if he wants to get into his dream college with a volleyball scholarship, he's gonna stay that way. I mean, all it takes is one call and a few fake tears and suddenly he isn't eligible anymore--" Sakurai's voice echoed through phone speakers clear as day.
This was it. This is what we needed! Too excited with these events, I jumped and hugged the spiky-haired ace. With this evidence we could finally put an end to all this drama.
_____Everything seemed to move at hyperspeed after that evening. When I got home afterwards Iwa emailed me the file and I ended up anonymously sending the entire conversation to both of Sakurai's parents as well as Aoba Johsai's administration office-- and you best believe that the next day during class, the girl (as well as her supposed 'boyfriend') was called down by the principal. I could only imagine how everything went, but all I could hope was that she got a fair punishment for her actions.
The school's famous volleyball captain came back to class alone just as the lunch bell rang, and he had this unreadable expression on his face. He just acted normal and made his way to his seat in front of mine to get his lunch and school bag. I didn't think anything of his actions, and just decided to leave him be for a while-- he would talk to me after he had time to process everything.
I packed up my notes on my desk and stood up, planning on finding a quiet place outside to eat, when I was suddenly grabbed by someone.
"Hey can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Shin? Uh-- sure," I was surprised at his attempt to get my attention, but whipped it off and agreed to meet with him. "Lead the way"
While I turned around and followed my classmate out the classroom door, I got a sneak peek at my ex-boyfriend. He looked a little surprised that I chose to leave with the soccer captain, and honestly, a little sad. He gave me a quick little smile and wave before I disappeared into the hallways.
Shin showed me to the back of the school by the soccer field. We sat on the stairs and he just sat there in silence, fidgeting with his fingers. He seemed so nervous I thought that I would try and make him a little more comfortable.
"It's nice and warm today, I'm glad we get to eat lunch outside" I tried to small, yet the only thing on my mind was that stupid pretty-boy that I couldn't get myself to hate.
"O-oh, yeah it really is," He took a deep breath and cleared his throat, "(Y/n), I know that this might seem a bit sudden, but I think you're really beautiful, and super nice, and I've liked you since before we even became lab partners...I was wonder if you would go on a date with me?"
Shocked was an understatement for what I was feeling. I had no idea that Shin thought of me in such a way, I mean I noticed that he was always smiling and happy around me but that was because we're friends.
"I don't know what to say...I didn't see this coming" I nervously laughed. I really didn't know what to do in this situation, but on further inspection this could be seen as an opportunity. This was my chance to get away from Oikawa Tōru and move on.
I opened my mouth ready to accept his feelings, but no words came out of my mouth. It was like my mind wanted to say yes, but my body and heart didn't. I couldn't help but remember the memories that the brunette and I shared together. Ranging from our first meeting in that elementary school gymnasium, to the night we had our first kiss, all the way to our first night spent together. As all the precious memories flooded my mind, more tears welled up in my eyes.
"I'm really sorry Shin, but I can't go out with you. I do love you as a friend, and cherish that relationship, but I'm in love with someone else...I hope you'll forgive me"
He looked at me, and gave me a friendly hug with a matching smile. "Please don't cry, I totally get it. Can we at least stay friends?"
"Absolutely!" I laughed at his stupid question. Of course we would stay friends, nothing would change that.
Now that that was dealt with, I had to go find a certain person.
My certain person.
