"Grab me a rope or tear a wire off of something will ya?"
I jogged into the teacher's lounge and pulled a wire out of behind the fridge and jogged back out to Daryl, who was struggling with the walker. "Is this good?" I said, handing him the wire.
"Yea, but I'm kinda busy here, can you tie it around is neck and around the table leg?"
I nodded, "Uh huh," and quickly wrapped the cord around the walker's neck and then around the table leg. It was a pretty big table, so not even three of these guys could move it. Maybe four of them though, but by then we would hopefully have a cage for them.
Daryl stepped back and smiled proudly, "Huh, I think I should name him."
I shook my head, "Don't you dare."
He chuckled and looked at me, "Why not?"
"He isn't a pet. He could truly hurt someone, and kill everyone in this school."
Daryl rolled his eyes, "Relax, Ash. I'm not gonna snuggle with him, just give him a name to go by."
I growled, "The students will consider him as a pet."
"Well, he is technically my pet."
I looked up at him, my frustration growing, "Cole, don't you dare take this walker as a pet. He is anything but. One wrong move and all of us are gone."
He looked at me, "What did you just call me?"
"I called you by your actual name. Yea, I did it. So what?"
"I said I'd rather you call me Daryl."
"I dont care," I said, rolling my eyes, "you will not have this walker as anything but a shield. Hear me?" He mumbled something under his breath, and I sighed, "Whatever, do what you want. I dont care anymore. I'll be somewhere else, Cole." With that, I walked to the door and opened it. Mid step, I turned slightly back towards him and said, "I don't want to lose the only thing that makes me happy," and walked out, shutting the door behind me.
The hallways were almost empty. Everyone was doing their jobs. I kind of felt bad for just staying here and doing unproductive stuff while everyone else worked. But I honestly couldn't think of anything to do, besides make blueprints for cages and fences and stuff. And maybe board up those windows... but I was too short, and I'd need Daryl's help with it. I mean Cole, I mean... ugh. It's so hard to call him by his nickname, and remember his real name. I think I'd only call him Cole when I was mad at him, like right now.
Who was he to think he could put everyone in danger just so he could have a cool "pet" to mess around with? I mean, come on. I could go and ask anyone how they felt about that and all of them would be in the same boat as me. Not because walkers are gross, but because they want to live. And so do I.
I sat on the bench and leaned against the widow. If it wasn't raining I would've gone out into the courtyard. But the quiet of the hallways was nice and relaxing. I sat there with my eyes closed, and remembered way back on my eighth birthday.
My parents had given me the ultimate birthday gift, a puppy. I loved her, her name was Lila. She was a Golden Retriever and Husky mix. She was gorgeous. Her chest and ears were white, while her body was golden. Her eyes were blue and green, which made her special. I took great care of her, and loved her with all my heart. But one day, when I came home from school, I saw that she was nowhere to be found. Somehow, she got out and ran away. And I was devastated. I cried for two days straight. I didn't talk, eat, go to school, or leave the place beside her dog bowl. And while I sat there, I wished that my precious friend would come back.
