The divorce of Patton's parents affected him a lot mentally and he represses his emotions. He's afraid of losing someone important and this is something he has in common with Virgil.

Remus always gets away from the duty of babysitting because he either finds an excuse to stay out or becomes a playmate of the kid instead of the babysitter.

(Ignore that british comment, I just really like the idea of Virgil having an accent and I was speculating with silly ideas.)
Sophia Emmerson and Felix Raymond used to be a couple but eventually they broke up due to priorities. Sophia wanted to finish her studies at the university while not having enough time to spend with Felix.
Felix tries to get over his ex-girlfriend with someone else who ends up giving life to Virgil. However one day, she doesn't come home and Felix decides to protect Virgil with his life and he brings him up alone.
5 years later, Virgil becomes very close friends with a boy called Janus in kindergarten.
One day, Virgil's father doesn't show up in the afternoon. It turned out that Felix was put in coma after an accident.
Virgil has no one he can go to, so Janus and Sophia welcome him with open arms, after a long process ending with the realisation that Janus and Virgil are both from Felix, thus they are half-brothers.
They came as soon as they heard new people move in the neighbourhood, Felix's sister and her husband and son, Logan Bancroft.
Virgil missing his father so much is one of the main reason he sees Patton as a father figure and they make up for the times he missed.
