Eren watched over the shoulder of his rescuer as what remained of his home crumbled and collapsed in on itself. The orange embers soaring up, painting patterns along the black sky, before vanishing. He hacked and coughed as his dry, scratched lungs cried out in pain from the smoke that had made its way in. He didn't think about what he had just seen or what would become of it. The only thought to cross his mind was a question. "Why?" Why did his family deserve to die? Why did the Marleyans come to his house and burn them? Why did they call us devils when they do things like this? Why was he the only one left alive? "Don't worry Eren. Those Marleyan pigs will suffer for everything they've done one day" Eren didn't respond. He was entranced by the fire, and the questions that plagued his mind. As his mind raced with these thoughts, he found his eyes becoming more and more difficult to keep open, and soon he fell asleep.

Eren woke up in a state of confusion and fear, his eyes darting around trying to take in his surroundings. He was lying on a bedroll inside of a small house. He had been placed beside a bed which was empty. Light beamed in from the small window across the room. He got up and walked out of the room. He followed the hall and found himself looking into the kitchen. Inside Siris was preparing a small meal. "Siris?" Eren asked. Siris turned around. "Eren. How do you feel?" Eren suddenly remembered everything that had happened the night before. He began to hyperventilate, and tears streamed down his face. Siris wrapped his arms around Eren. "Don't worry. It's all going to be okay. You're safe." But it wasn't fear for his safety that caused him to break into tears. It was the loss of his family. And it was that same loss that ignited the rage within him to get revenge on the Marleyans. To avenge his family, and make those that killed them suffer.

Eren spent the next few years of his life being raised by Siris. Around the time of his coming of age, Eren came upon an eldian spy who had established himself as a doctor, and was willing to fake a blood test for him, so that he could infiltrate the Marleyan government. With the doctor's help managed to earn a position within the Marleyan Public Security Authorities. Eren spent the next years of his life doing his duties for the Marleyan Government. In order to maintain his cover, Eren had to fully embrace his Marleyan identity. He had to punish and insult the Eldians whose blood ran through his veins. He had to watch as they suffered and were helpless to do anything. There were times where it was too much to bear and Eren needed to find a way to let his anger and frustration with the Marleyans out. He wandered the streets of Marley trying to clear his head, when he found a building at the end of the road. Looking up at the sign which hung above the front entrance, and it simply read, "Sports Hall."

Eren entered the building and looked around seeing a strange assortment of activities being practiced. There were men who lifted heavy stones for no reason at all, men who practiced sparring, men who were simply punching and hitting posts with pads attached to them. Eren gazed in astonishment, before a noise caught his attention. Near the back of the room came a loud yell, and Eren turned his head in time to see a man lifting another man on his shoulders before throwing him to the ground. Curious, he walked towards them, and as they recognized him as a security officer they both stood to meet him. "Can we help you sir?"

"Oh. I'm sorry I forgot to remove my uniform. I'm not here on security business. I'm just wondering, what do you call this?" The men looked to each other, unsure. "We don't really have a name for it. It's just something we enjoy. We come here and we fight each other, attempting to get the other to admit defeat.* It's just something we do, so there's been no reason to name it."

*Akin to the sport of wrestling

"May I watch?" The men both paused, and exchanged nervous glances, both wondering if Eren was attempting to trick them in some way. "Of- of course." Eren stood and watched as the two men nervously began to grapple with each other. Quickly they fell into their rhythm and before long, one had been put into a choke hold and had tapped out. The men shook hands and both sat down to rest. Eren smiled and said, "You must let me join you."
