"Damn it!" Grey shouted, chucking the picture frame they had been holding against the wall. They grabbed computers from the desks and started pushing them off, watching their screens shatter on the floor with angry dissatisfaction.
Jackson sighed and rested his head in his hand. "Surely there's something we can use here." he muttered to himself, scrolling through the report again. He pulled up google and searched the name of the person framed for their murders.
"Well," he said, "we know it's somewhere in Colorado."
"What?" Grey asked, pausing their rampage and looking at the computer.
Jackson gestured to the article he had pulled up. "The person they framed was tried and convicted of their murders in Colorado, so that's where they were located. And by the looks of it, they were in the city of Fort Collins."
Grey opened their mouth to reply, but before they could, the fire alarm sounded. Jackson and Grey both instinctively covered their ears as it did. No sprinklers came on, and the fire alarms in the room itself seemed unaffected.
"What the--"
Before either could react, a bat-like beast a few feet taller than a horse burst through the doorway, breaking through the wall and sending rubble down on the computers. The fire alarm stopped as it closed its mouth and started sniffing around.
Grey and Jackson stood frozen for a moment, not sure what to do, but Grey quickly snapped out of their funk.
They grabbed Jackson's hand and led him behind a desk on the opposite side of the beast before pulling out their deck of cards.
"I don't think a card trick is going to help right now," Jackson whispered, watching the beast from under the desk.
Grey shushed him and peeked his head above, whipping one of the cards towards the monster. It flew silently through the air before embedding in the creature's hide. It let out a shriek that sounded terrifyingly human and spun around.
Grey ducked below the desk again.
"Nice shot," Jackson whispered.
Grey silently nodded.
It was Jackson's turn to sneak a peek at the monster. It resembled a bat, but much much larger. It's wings were covered in spines and it's face was covered almost entirely by a mouth filled with razor sharp teeth.
Jackson ducked back down and whispered. "It's got no eyes."
"What?"
"No eyes."
The two spooky boys could feel thumps in the ground as the monster lumbered closer to their hiding space. The two of them quickly clammed up. The thumps stopped and things were silent for a moment before the monster let out another sound, another human sounding yelp, this one much higher.
Grey loudly gasped when they heard it and the desk went flying across the room.
"Scatter!" Jackson shouted, jumping out of the way as the beast swatted one of it's giant wings at them.
Grey rolled out of the way and threw another card at the beast. This one missed and instead struck the fire alarm on the wall, setting off the alarm and the sprinkler system.
"[static]," they yelled.
The beast whipped around and struck their side, sending Grey tumbling to the other side of the room. The beast followed and brought one of their spines down onto them. They tried to roll out of the way, just barely making it. The spine only scratched their arm. They covered their mouth to muffle their whimper.
