Kai's pov: one week later

"SMITH! BROOKESTONE! OVER HERE NOW!" Our coach shouted in our faces so much, we were used to it. Cole and I ran over to coach who was infuriated.

Me and Cole were the only ones in our group who did a sport. Jay was more of a non-athletic guy and Lloyd says his dad doesn't want him injured in any sport. Nya doesn't either but still comes to my games cause she's a supportive sis.

Zane is in too many clubs to have time and Pix does them with him so those lovebirds are out.
I told Nya she should join the cheer team and she said she'd think about it but that was weeks ago.

Anyway, Cole and I approached our red faced coach. He slammed his clipboard on the bench and paced back and forth. We just stared confused until he finally talked. "So, our players thought it would be okay, to skip practice." He said and Cole spoke. "Huh? Is that why you're so mad?" I tried to shush him but coach just continued.

"THEY SKIPPED PRACTICE TO FRICKIN MAKE OUT WITH THE CHEERLEADERS!" He screamed in our faces and we flinched. I had heard about Morro making out with them but the other players? Huh, weird.

"Coach, why did you need to call us?" Cole asked, clearly confused. I was too. How was this our problem? He looked steamed and picked up his clipboard. "I WANT YOU TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! YOU'RE THE CAPTAIN AND YOU'RE HIS RIGHT HAND MAN!" He yelled in our faces again. Cole looked taken aback and I just nodded.

"I'll be out of town til next week so Smith, you and Brookestone need to help the assistant coach out." He said a little more chill but still annoyingly loud.

"Yes sir." We say in sync. He nods his approval as we go to train the team. "All right listen up!" I yell to everyone. They face Cole and I and I start talking. "Coach will be out til next week so til then I'm in charge! Understand?!" They all nod firmly and Cole motions them all to the field.

(Okay y'all I know absolutely NOTHING about football :/ My little brother and dad are the ones who watch the games and stuff. I don't even watch the super bowl 🤦‍♀️ so if I get some stuff wrong then I'm sorry, I'm doing my research on it but still pls spare me ://///)

After hours of intense training, the guys are dripping in sweat and panting like no ones business. Right as we go into huddle, Morro makes his way in, ready for practice.

"And where have you been?" I ask and he points to himself innocently. "Me?! I was running behind." I see Cole facepalm and I almost do the same. "You do realize that it is now 10:00 at night and practice started after school." I said and he stands there dumbfounded.

"I can't deal with you today." I say and Cole breaks the huddle with our chant. While walking off, Morro grabs my shoulder and forces me to look at him. Cole threatens to punch him but I put a hand up.

"Listen captain, I don't care about stupid practices or any routines that this team has. Y'all suck and that's why I'm joining the Shintaro tigers team." He said and Cole lunged forward. I stopped him and Morro smirked.

"Of course I'll still come here for school but they have a much better team than this puny school, probably even a better captain." That's when Cole lost it.

He tackled Morro to the ground and although I appreciate Cole's loyalty, it scared the living daylights outa me. I tried hard to rip them apart as Cole broke Morro's nose with an excruciating hit.

"Cole! Stop!" I say. I pull them apart and make sure it didn't escalate. Morro held his nose but still smirked under the pain Cole gave him. "See you on Saturday." He casually says.

"I thought—" Morro stops. "Don't worry, I'm still going here, for school." And he left.

I check to make sure Cole wasn't injured. Thank goodness he only had a bloody nose. "You should go get yourself cleaned up, I say and he nods, not taking his eyes off Morro.

"I'll never forgive him for that." He says and we walk off. "Cole, thank you." I say as we hop in my car. "No problem, you would do the same for me." The cool thing about me and Cole's relationship is that we would take a bullet for each other. We bonded like brothers and shared that bond since elementary.

We soon pull up in Cole's driveway and he thanks me for taking him home. "No problem." Is all I say and I drive off.

When Kai gets home

I pull up in the parking lot, grabbing my things and slamming the door. I reached for my keys and unlocked the door to Nya and I's apartment with a satisfying click. The door creaked open to reveal a small living room with nothing more than a couch and a tv inside. Nya's shoes were lined up by the door and I took mine off and set them aside by her's.

I made my way to our cramped kitchen to find only a refrigerator, oven, some small cabinets, a dining table and another small fridge where we kept all our drinks.
The place was small and modest but it was home. I sat at the small wooden table, took out my phone and began to scroll.

I should be doing homework but 5 minutes of scrolling on Instagram shouldn't be that bad.

Right?

After what felt like 5 minutes, I stood up to realize a whole 30 minutes had passed. Making my way through our small, darkened apartment, I creaked open the door to mine and Nya's room to find her already snuggled up in bed. Her facial expression was peaceful and her chest rose up and sank down in calm breathes. Her hand was tucked under her cheek and the other was holding a small piece of paper.

Being me and my nosy self, I strolled over to her and carefully slipped the paper out of her hand. I slowly opened it up and my heart skipped a beat.

There, in the slip of paper, was a photo of Nya and I but we were younger then. Maybe 3 and 5? Crouched behind us, embracing us in a giant hug, were our parents young and joyful.
Our mother and father had the same raven black hair as Nya which made me wonder if I was adopted cause of my brown hair but genetics were weird so I pushed that aside.

Our family used to be so happy and carefree but now all that's left is Nya and I. As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I could manage to see tear stains on Nya's young face. I felt many emotions bubble inside but not knowing how to handle them, I pushed them aside as well.

I remember mom used to say that keeping your emotions and stress to yourself could result in sickness both physical and emotional. (True fact)

I sighed sadly as I slipped the picture back into Nya's hand and went to change in the bathroom. Since our room was shared, we had to change clothes in our all too small bathroom.

As I pulled open the covers, I rustled until I found the right position and stared at the ceiling then at Nya, then back at the ceiling. Life became so hard after Mom and Dad died.

'Why can't things be like they used to be?'

Annnnnnd imma leave it right there for now :3
