She opened her eyes to blaring light and the sound of heavy breathing.
It took far too long to register that it was her own breath that she was hearing. Flowing back and forth in a somewhat robotic way. She blinked more and her eyes slid around the room, recognising nothing until her eyes finally fixed on a form sleeping in the corner, eyes closed, with large hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans.
She could hardly believe how vivid heaven appeared now on the other side. Almost like a mirage that wasn't to be touched but only observed beyond the pale halo that clouded her irises.
"Michael..." her dry voice had attempted to call out and although her slur sounded nothing like his name, he still opened his eyes and gradually leaned in toward her.
"Lia." He quickly reached for her hand and held onto it. "You're awake..." He said and sat up straight, appearing to be torn between the option of hugging her and bursting into tears.
"Am I dead?" She'd asked him and his brows shot up high.
"Dead? No Lia, Dr Alves saved your life." He said, tugging on her hand, a noticeable whimpering in his tone of voice. "I'm so thankful." His eyes scanned over every inch of her face and he swallowed deeply. "I've been waiting so long for you to wake up...just to... to tell you that I'm sorry. Sorry I didn't believe that you were just as much a victim in this as me. Only a mad person would try to stand up against somebody holding a gun and...god girl, you did it but thank god you made it." He said and when she felt the beginning of a small laugh trying to work it's way up, she had to quickly stifle it as the all too familiar pain began to creep into her awareness once again. Then remembering the excruciating impact of the bullet her eyes suddenly widened.
"Damiáo." she mumbled into the large oxygen mask.
"Hmm?" Michael leaned closer tilting his ear close to the mask.
"What happened to Damiáo." She asked weakly.
"He's in police custody. They came by right after the ambulance did. He was still unconscious after Sam hit him but as soon as he woke up they arrested him for breaking and entering." Michael said his jaw clenching then he shook his head. "Honestly I feel he should get put away for life for what he's done to you." He said. Lia slowly looked away from him. "Why didn't you tell me about him? I had no idea you had family that were capable of this." He said and Lia sighed heavily.
"He isn't my family Michael." She said, her eyes shiny with regret. "He is more like...my ex boyfriend." She spoke through shaky breaths and Michael hovered at the end of his seat in silence. "He and Gonçalo, and their whole gang, they run Copacabana. They trapped me there for so long. They were the ones who burnt down the cabin and they were the ones who took my son away. They have done so many bad things to me and to so many people..." She said and her hand did it's best to tighten around Michael's, feeling a sense of safety when holding onto it.
"Lia, I wish you would have told me all of this earlier. Maybe we could have prepared better and things would never have had to go this far." he said and she sensed his disappointment.
"I was so afraid Michael. I am sorry for that." She said and Michael sighed slightly before he lifted and kissed her hand.
"Don't worry, its over with now...and my family are here." He said and her eyes gazed deeply into his. "They flew straight here when they found out what happened and that Sam was in hospital." He shrugged solemnly and she blinked feeling herself welling up.
"Is he okay?"
"He's fine, he has a few broken ribs but he'll be okay" Michael let his eyes fall to her hand and he rubbed it soothingly in his. "...you know Lia with my family here it kind of complicates things." He said and she felt her brows furrow. "What I mean to say is...well...about...the whole marriage thing."
