waking up is the hardest part.

waking up and being disoriented, and not knowing where you are, is the worst part.

i shoot up in bed, breathing hard and being absolutely drenched in sweat. i blink, and two, fat tears stream down my face as i try to get my eyes to focus.

the door opens quietly, and i freeze, trying to be quiet.

"y/n?" daniel whispers, looking for my figure in the darkness. once he spots me, his eyes soften. i'm shaking, trying to talk to him, tell him to go downstairs, but my throat is tight with fear. i just look at him in panic, hoping he'll understand what i'm trying to tell him.

his face contorts immediately to worry when he sees me panicking. "hey, hey, hey what's wrong?" he quietly walks over to the bed, lifting me up into his arms.

"i can't sleep," i sob, trembling violently. i'm hot and sweating through my clothes.

"did you have another nightmare? is that what happened?" his hand gently moves my hair off my sticky forehead. i nod against him, my heart pounding against my chest.

"you're soaked." he says quietly, lifting me off his chest so he can grab onto the hem of my shirt. "let's get these clothes off you." he gently lifts my shirt off, and i instantly feel soothed by the cold air against my skin.

he takes his shirt off, offering it to me. i lift my arms up so he can put it on. i slip my arms through the holes and i feel his fingers brush against my ribs and i'm instantly more awake. i sigh once i feel the soft cotton, and the smell of his cologne wafting off his shirt.

he gently pulls me against him again, rocking from side to side. "you're okay, baby." his voice soothes me instantly, and i nuzzle closer.

"i'm sorry-"

"shh," he cuts me off. "you already know you don't need to apologize, love." his thumb rubs back and forth against the side of my thigh.

i sigh again, kissing the side of his collar bone. "thank you."

"go to sleep, y/n. you're tired, i can hear it in your voice." i feel his lips press to my hair.

i don't answer, my heart rate slowing down and my eyes beginning to close. i focus on the sound of his heart beat, the seconds between each time he inhales quietly through his nose. i focus on the soft feel of his shirt against my skin, and how warm he feels against me.

i fall asleep as i hear his quiet, "i love you."
