Mary had never been to Diagon Alley before; every time her brothers went there the previous years, she was forced to remain with Auntie Emma, who was very nice, but was the most magicless person that ever lived on Earth.

But that year, that was her year! And it was time for her to visit Diagon Alley for the first time.

It was the 1st of August, the letters that confirmed their attending to Hogwarts for that year had been sent and the three MacDonald children were sitting in the backseats of their father's car. Mary was sitting in the middle seat, with Magnus at her left and Brian at her right and she was looking right in front of her, excited as she had never been before.

Their mother had gone to see Auntie Emma, who had broken her leg recently, and their father had to go to work, so it was very early in the morning when they arrived in the centre of London. The three siblings got off the car.

«Magnus, I trust you to keep an eye on your siblings» said Mr. MacDonald, not looking particularly anxious of leaving the three of them all by themselves. «I'll be back here at five in the afternoon».

«Don't worry dad, I'm not going to let them starve» Magnus replied, winking at him. «Have a good day».

The three MacDonalds watched their father's car as it disappeared in the traffic and they started to walk through the city. Magnus and Brian knew exactly where to go and Mary followed them, alternating running and walking to keep up with their long legs.

They started to go down an apparently normal road, not very crowded. Nothing in that road seemed to be remotely magical or different from the ordinary, and Mary thought they probably went the wrong way...

«Mary! Here!»

Mary turned around, just to see Magnus and Brian a few meters behind her; they had stopped in front of a grubby-looking pub. Mary reached her brothers and smiled, looking around.

«So?» she asked, curiously.

Brian pointed at the pub, with a little smirk on his face. «This is the way to Diagon Alley».

Mary looked at the pub. Nothing about it could give a hint of the magic she had heard of. Of course the wizards had to find some way to seep in the muggle world, but that? It just seemed extremely sad.

Magnus and Brian exchanged some amused looks. «Are you disappointed, Mary?»

«I mean, I hoped in something more... magical, you know?»

«You'll learn not everything about magic is as beautiful as you'd like it to be» said Brian, pushing her a little. «And besides that, they cook wonderfully here at the Leaky Cauldron»

The three siblings entered in the pub, empty, if not for the owner, a middle aged man, who was losing his hair. He didn't seem surprised to see them there, all by themselves.

«Good morning kids, can I offer you something to eat or drink?»

«No thanks, Tom, we're going to get some furniture for Hogwarts first. Maybe later» said Magnus, leading his siblings through the bar and out into a small, walled courtyard.

«Do we have to go to Gringotts, Magnus?» asked, Brian, removing his backpack from his back to take a bottle of water.

«Nope, mom and dad exchanged too much money last year, so we have enough for this year too» replied the older brother, pulling his wand out from the pocket of his trousers.

«Wait, for the three of us?»

«Yes... well I suppose they did some maths error actually»

«Where, exactly, do you guys want to go?» asked Mary, annoyed by the fact that they were clearly not telling her something; they were in a courtyard so small the three of them struggled to stay there at the same time!
