"Do you believe in love?"
I watch in confusion, as she shakes her head and sighs. As if this whole conversation is silly, far too immature for her. She pretends as if a year ago from now we weren't tanning on the beach, with the sun in our eyes and sand on our bodies. Watching in disgust as the boys catcalled the seniors, whooping and bending over in laughter. We would be different, we said.
This year would be our time. But she's so different from the girl whom I used to call my sister.
"Love is a silly thing. It is something we tell ourselves when we are bored and lonely. There is only lust." She grins at me as she sets her cards down. Narrowing her eyes, her stare glares saucers into my face, as she examines me head to toe. I flinch in surprise when her hand reaches out and grabs the bottom of my chin.
Her breath fans onto my face and I scrunch my nose in distaste. She was so different from the girl I remember.
More sophisticated. Perhaps she had grown up in these few months, after everything that went down. She changed her whole look and personality hoping to leave the old her behind and start a new identity. Where the pain of the past, memories, and secrets couldn't touch us. We abandoned those innocent, naive girls behind
