George's pov
I awoke to the sound of a bird chirping. I groggily put my hand over my head as I open my eyes as a shield from the sun. Dream was next to me, awake like normal.
I remember last night. I had so many questions that I wanted to ask, about why he had given those kids that money- and about why he had trusted me to the extent where he showed me half of his face. Things were just happening really fast, it's barely even been a week since we've met.
I suddenly had a burst of courage and so without warning blurted out a question. "Your mask, what's its origin?"
Moments later I realized what I had said aloud, I covered my mouth with my hands. The masked man just looked over at me, I couldn't read him.
A few seconds of silence pass and I feel like an idiot before he then finally answers. "It was sort of like.. a gift?"
The way he said it sounded like he was questioning himself.
"Before it was deemed mine, it was worn by.. someone I grew up with-"
I could tell the memory wasn't a good one as he started shaking a bit though calming himself down as quickly as it started. "You don't have to contin-"
"No, I will share" I was cut off.
"My past isn't the greatest, I grew up a test subject; for the guild- I think I was maybe 11 when something.. happened to my family. Following those events, the one known as technoblade took me and my brother into the guild. Little did I know what the guild planned to do with us. They're trying to create something called the next generation."
Hmm. I blinked a few times, processing the information.
"These next-generation humans are very, how do I put this, animalistic. They have heightened senses and they snap at the strong scent of blood."
This was definitely a lot to take in, I had asked one simple question and yet he was spewing everything.
"Those pills that you have, which are mine-" he points to the lump in my pocket. "-Are pills that dull or nullify my senses most importantly my sense of smell, at first I get knocked out due to the sudden change and then when I wake up, voila."
That makes so much more sense, why he had told me to give these to him if he ever went overboard, and how they had made him go from psycho to calm during our first encounter. I had always assumed it was just to help him sleep, but I guess there was a much deeper meaning.
"But continuing.. they 'create' these next gens by injecting their wrist band with some special serum, it's the guilds greatest invention. You can tell that someone is a next-gen by their band, if they survive the experiment they'll have what they call a 'glitched band'"
He taps the underside of his wrist and his appears. It was the same mix of blue yellow and black that it used to be. It wasn't like other bands that were plain colors this was multiple and looked rugged.
But I was still very confused. "Going back a little-" dream nodded. "-what did you mean by 'they snap at the shell of blood'?"
Dream puts a hand in his chin. "Think of it like a wolf or a shark, when the next gens smell blood, their mind changes. It clicks and the only thought in their mind is 'kill'."
A realization dawned on me. He knows this because he experiences this. The slaughterhouse that he left behind at the guild sister building, I probably was witnessing this 'next-generation power'. But just how many times had he done that? Go off and murder tens maybe hundreds of people just because he couldn't help it. I frowned and kept thinking.
"you said 'if they survive the experiment' what does that mean?"
"It's a painful process. From what I know, most people they decide to test are just in tiny box chambers. After we're injected it's just straight intense pain for days, maybe for weeks. They don't feed us, almost like starving us. I heard that many don't survive."
My mind is still whirling at all that I had never known about the guild, about our society, and what this meant for the future.
"Getting back to the question you asked me, each next-gen is assigned a supervisor. Mine was a man named nightmare."
My eyes widen.
"The killer who's sigil was the neck slash, the nightmare?"
"Yes, the nightmare. He said that he would 'take me out' for expeditions of which I can only guess meant letting me loose. He wasn't nice, harassed me and I was and am still afraid of him. likewise, I got my genocider name from him too." He pointed to his mask. "And this also used to belong to him."
"But you said it was a gift to you?"
"-And it was. I begged for it, I hid behind it, and still do. I'm too ashamed to remove it, to be seen murdering with my face open to the world."
I mouthed a silent 'oh'
"The last I can remember is nightmare letting me out, something prohibited and then I blacked out and woke up next to you."
Hm. Dream clearly seemed to just be a puppet in this game, heck all of us, everyone alive seemed to have their strings being pulled by the guild.
"Enough about me though, there's something important that I need to share."
I gesture for him to go on.
"There's a new next-gen and somehow they're been able to reach out to me- we're connected somehow."
"Ok.. and what?"
"He says his name is ranboo. He had been taken by his home and was injected and survived. He says the guild has put him through multiple trials and he says he's overheard them making the serum a mandatory 'vaccination' for the whole population to receive."
We both seem to be thinking about the matter on hand.
"And if they do that..." I start.
"Then they'll make everyone kill each other," dream says, finishing my sentence.
"This whole wristband killing for money thing was a fluke just a bait for when people will be killing others for fun until only the strongest came out on top."
To think that our whole lives were a lie, just a beginning stage to a grander plan.
"Ranboo also asked us to get him out. He's suffering, and he told me that his supervisor goes by the code name awsomedude, causal name, Sam. What do you think?" Dream asked.
I think. He must be miserable there and if he undergoes anymore he might go mad. But at the same time going directly there to save him would be very dangerous. Sneaking into the very place that wants to capture us sounds a bit terrifying. But this is still a person's life on the line and so I make my decision.
"I will of course respect and go with whatever decision you decide to make for us, but I think we should save him. Not only are we rescuing him from that monstrosity of a life but we might be able to get more information out of him."
I watch as dream soaks up my words.
"Alright, we'll go save him. It's dangerous but if we succeed, the benefit is very great on our end. We need a plan though."
The sun was blazing hot on my back as I guessed it was just past noon. "We should probably try to do it at night, and to get a general idea of layout and where we need to go," I say.
"I had an idea, we should ask the receptionist Toby about the layout" he states.
"Ok, sure. But how do we contact him?" I ask.
Dream puts a hand on his knee to help him stand up and he turns his back to me as he starts walking to who knows where.
"Follow me"
